DJ Curtis Harmon In Tokyo

About Me

Welcome. Health, wealth, peace and blessings to all and thank you for visiting. I am the former L.A. radio mix show dj at AM stereo 1580 KDAY & 102.3 KJLH-FM. With more than 16 years of experience living and working in the Tokyo metropolitan areas in the entertainment and music business fields as an event coordinater, dj, mc, record / artists promoter, lecturer, consultant, etc. My services are available for the territory of Japan. I am willing to relocate. Born the summer of 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware. Relocated to Princess Anne, Maryland and raised in nearby Westover on the eastern shore. Graduated in 1978 from Washington High school ( Jaguars ) where sometime around '76-'77 formed the dj duo called " The Dynamics " with classmate Anthony Echols. Together we did highly popular and successful friday night after-school dances for various WHS orginizations. I have to credit area dj Sam Doane as one of my early mc personality influences along with local niteclub dj "Fly" and on-air jock Chris Barry from am radio WJDY. Chris gave me my first opportunities to hang around a radio station and go on live remotes. Spent my high school summers on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus in the Upward Bound program which broadened my people scope during my teen years and introduced me to Black college student & fraternity / sorority life, "homecoming"and college parties! After graduating high school Anthony split town and I hooked up with Ellis Crump and his mobile dj unit " Disco Funk Incorporated " ( DFI ) out of Salisbury, Maryland. Ellis was into the electronics side of dj equipment and he turned me loose on the turntables to create the Disco Funk sound and groove. My cousin David Collins came on as master of ceremony. We also included stage-dance-lights-fireworks & fog machines into our shows. Other members of DFI included James "Swann" Robert from B-more, Ray Lockamy from N.C., Mark Hill from D.C. and Bryant Coleman among others. Everyone got along and jelled to make our parties one hell of an event. We also coordinated mobile dj battles with The Controller from Norfolk VA ,Chuck Franklin & Grandmaster Funk from Berlin MD , NYCS from Cambridge MD among others. All the groups got along because we all loved music, good sound, moving the crowd and partying. Thomas Stevenson gave me the opportunity to move to L.A. and my cousin Golden Teagle gave me the challenge. That push and encouragement was all I needed. I'll make this brief from that point up to the present. Got to L.A. and along with William "Bill" Jones from Irvington,NJ presented a mixtape to Jim Maddox (then GM of KJLH which is owned by Stevie Wonder) with the help of Wendall Bates and Chris Jonz along with the idea of doing a mastermix show. Did the "KJLH Saturday Night Hotmix Show" along with Greg Royal for a couple of years before moving on to do the "Curtis Harmon Quickmix" on 1580 KDAY (thanks to Steve Washington and Jack Patterson) until the station signed off the airwaves in `91. Thanks to Eddie from JDC Records and Marr Takeuchi I was able to tour Japan and finally settle in Tokyo. While in LA I also worked as a Billboard reporter and buyer for Wherehouse Records store 502 on La Brea and Rodeo, Record Industries as a record buyer/manager with stores on Crenshaw, Manchester and El Segundo Blvds., director of Impact Record Pool off of King and Crenshaw Blvds., Tower Sunset and also as a remixer/consultant/promoter/writer and video host among other entertainment related endeavours. Also worked as an international coordinater, tv/radio and tour dj/promoter/emcee/event planner at Interlink Music Japan and Handcuts Records while currently involved in various aspects of the music and entertainment businesses in the Tokyo metropolitan regions. Also created, coordinated and recorded cd's under the name THE FUNKY BOYZ (Japan releases only).
