DJ Curtis Harmon In Tokyo

About Me

I am the former Los Angeles radio mix show dj from 1580 KDAY and 102.3 KJLH. With more than 16 years (since 1991) of experience living and working in the Tokyo region in the music entertainment business as an event planner-coordinater, dj, emcee, records and artists promoter and lecturer. My services are available for the territory of Japan and I am willing to relocate for business purposes. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, relocated to Princess Anne, Maryland and raised in nearby Westover on the eastern shore. Graduated 1978 from Washington High School (Jaguars). Formed mobile dj group "The Dynamics" with classmate Anthony Echols. Did afterschool dances for WHS. I have to credit DJ Sam Doane as one of my mentors along with local club dj "Fly" as well as on-air radio personality Chris Barry (WJDY). Spent my high school summer vacations working and studying on the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (Hawks) campus in the Upward Bound Program (thanks to UB staff and mentors Norman Tilghman and Alverne Chesterfield). Later teamed up with Ellis Crump and his mobile dj group "Disco Funk" from Salisbury, Maryland. Ellis really gave me the support to develop as a dj. My cousin David Collins was our emcee (and my mc sensei) and he later worked as an on-air dj at WESM. We also featured stage-dance-lights-fireworks and fog machines into our shows. Other members of DFI included James "Swann" Robert from Baltimore MD, Ray Lockamy from N.C., Mark Hill from D.C., Bryant Coleman and other numerous crew members. We also coordinated mobile dj "battles" with The Controller from Norfolk VA, Grandmaster Funk from Berlin MD, NYCS from Cambridge MD and other groups. My good friend Thomas Stevenson provided my opportunity to move to LA and my cousin Golden Teagle convinced me to go west. Got to LA and hooked up with DJ William "Bill" Jones from Irvington,NJ. We submitted mixtape demos to Cliff Winston and Jim Maddox of KJLH (owned by Stevie Wonder). With the guidance of record biz vets Wendall Bates and Chris Jonz I did the "KJLH Saturday Night Hot Mix Show" with DJ Greg Royal before moving on to do the "Curtis Harmon Quickmix" at KDAY (thanks to station MD Steve Washington and Jack Patterson). Thanks to Eddie (JDC Records) and Marr Takeuchi (Korean Air) I was able to go dj in Japan and settle in Tokyo. While in Los Angeles I was a Billboard Magazine music retail sales chart reporter and music product buyer for Wherehouse Records, record buyer-manager for mom and pops music retail stores The Record Industries, interim co-director of Impact Record Pool, Tower Records on Sunset (thanks to Lisa Session) and a remixer-consultant-promoter-writer and video host. In Japan I was hired as an international music project coordinater, television-radio-tour dj, promoter, emcee, event planner for Interlink Music Japan and Handcuts Records Japan. I also created, coordinated and recorded cd's with Danish producer Soren Petersen aka DJ Cash as "The Funky Boyz" (released and distributed in Japan through Teichiku Records). Also planned and coordinated a segment of Yo!MTV Raps in Tokyo featuring Fab Five Freddy as well as coordinated club parties for Body Count,Ice Cube,Snoop/Dr. Dre,Phar Cyde among a host of others.
