The Spoils

NEW ZEALAND TOUR APRIL / MAY 2008

About Me

THE SPOILS formed towards the end of the 20th century in the ever diminishing bohemian corner of beach suburb, St. Kilda. In 2001 their debut, "Hurtsville" was released to critical acclaim selling well overseas as well as in their home country. What followed were countless tours of Australia with the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, Catpower, The Flying Burrito Bros and Richard Buckner among others, a shelved recording of Brian Wilson inspired surf songs, a chapter dedicated to them in a book and the loss of two core members. In 2002, The Spoils travelled to Brisbane and settled on a northern postcode later returning triumphantly in 2005 to release their second album, "Goodnight Victoria".
Fresh from touring “Goodnight Victoria”, including performances at the 2006 & 2007 Queenscliff Music Festival, The Famous Spiegeltent and The Age Writers Festival as well as a tour of New Zealand, THE SPOILS released ,"The Spell" single and toured Europe for the first time taking in Germany, France, Czech Republic & Spain. They are currently gearing up for their return to New Zealand in April 2008.
THE SPOILS 3rd album will be released to coincide with the band’s return to Europe in September 2008.
"Goodnight Victoria" is available from all good record stores or online at www.i-tunes.com
Unfortunately, "Hurtsville" is temporarily out of print however you may be able to find a pre-loved copy in your favourite 2nd hand record store. It is however available at i-tunes.
"GOODNIGHT VICTORIA" REVIEWS:
"Goodnight Victoria" - Rolling Stone Magazine ***1/2
The delivery has all the hallmarks of a group of musicians perfectly in sync. The Sunday Age ****
Twangy guitars, Spanish horns, violin and accordion drive Sean Simmons' Raymond Chandler-style noir tales of desperadoes, drunks and a dangerous woman. The Age, EG ***1/2
"The Spoils make the kind of music that send reviewers blind with the need to jerk off their poesy about how great it truly is". FasterLouder.Com ****
"The doleful vocals of Sean Simmons work well , bringing the urgency of pulp fiction crime novels of yore to life". Beat Magazine
"With a strangled desperation that is missing in these times of ironic stares and the open heart surgery that has become (scr)e(a)mo. The effect is that it makes you lean in closer during each verse.". FasterLouder.Com ****
"Australia's, The Spoils have a sound that I could only describe as Nick Cave stumbling across Tom Waits mugging Marlene Dietrich in a Berlin alleyway while they're all on the way to the carnivale' ". The Empire Times
"Warmington St." and "Goodnight Victoria" show the spark the band ignites every time the voice of Sean Simmons & yearning violin of Bronwyn Henderson come together". Time-Off Magazine
"The Spoils make music that Europeans love (fact) and that Australians will by and large ignore because theyre too busy being told they love shit albums. FasterLouder.Com ****
