Second Viennese School's entirely instrumental music consists of single pieces which usually clock in at around 40 minutes. These are heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground bootleg series recorded by Robert Quine, with its multiple 20-minute-plus versions of Sister Ray. Other key influences include Rhys Chatham (with whom Lisa has performed), Glenn Branca, and Steve Reich; Keiji Haino, especially with Fushitsusha; and Rocket From the Tombs. Rather than using a drummer, Second Viennese School exploit the hypnotic qualities of deep house music, using loops by some of this genre's more interesting and sophisticated exponents (Moodymann, Jeff Mills) as a backdrop for their own psychedelic drone-infused musical creations. Second Viennese School's performance film, SVS, shot beautifully by Adam Spellicy, can be seen and heard in full at the View My Videos link on this page. By Means of Lights (2008) features Adam Simmons guesting on wild saxophone; mixing by our man Casey Rice.
