About Me

New Tango Orquesta, who have become well known in underground circles, for their unique music and their focused performances, have been critically acclaimed all over the world as the "hope" of new tango. Five young musicians playing bandoneon, violin, piano, double bass and electric guitar constitute a unique sound using freshly made compositions. The music has got its origin in "Nuevo tango", the genre Astor Piazzolla created in the 20th century by mixing tango, Baroque music and jazz. From these roots the NTO makes innovative excursions as well as exploring and animating the genre. They refurbish the new tango, go deep in improvisations and tickle the senses with equilibristic Baroque melodies. They beat taut tango, dynamic diversity and independent-progressions into the music and make it into a game, a cry and heartbeating love. The music speaks in exaggerated metaphors and does not back off from what's absolutely real.BIOGRAPHYNTO began in 1996 and set about experimenting with newly composed music resulting in the debut album "The New Tango Orquesta" released in 1998. The album was followed by tours and gigs around Sweden.Because of the regeneration and development within the genre of tango music, they were invited in 1999 to partake in various festivals in Uruguay and Argentina, both homelands of tango. In Buenos Aires they performed at the Centro Astor Piazzolla, where they were met by standing ovations and open arms. Their newly composed material was above all received with joy, and enthusiasm for the fact that the genre was still alive and well. In the autumn of 1999 they recorded the soundtrack to the film "I skuggan av en tango".Their second CD "Part II" was released in 2000 and critically acclaimed all around the world. With this followed a great many gigs around Sweden and the band were invited by the media mogul Artemy Troitsky, to do a tour in Russia. This meant several engagements in Moscow as well as an appearance on the TV-show "Anthropology", which was making a program especially for NTO. After that the band travelled on to Rostov and Krasnodar in southern Russia, where they did a number of concerts. In 2001 they did their first tour in Germany including concerts in Berlin and Potsdam and a short live performance for the radio station "Multikulti". In 2002 they recorded newly composed music for the Gothenburg theatre company "Atelierteatern" as well as performing in a dance act in the Swedish town of Enköping. In spring the same year Swedish Radio aired a concert recorded live in 2001.The present line-up was fortified in 2003 when Josef started as the band's new double bassist. Again they toured in Russia and Germany. In Russia they drew crowded houses at rock clubs in Moscow and St Petersburg and they appeared on the radio show "Apology" on Russian channel 1, an hour-long concert broadcast live to 130 millions listeners. In Germany they performed at galleries and jazz clubs throughout Hamburg, Lübeck, Potsdam and Berlin. In 2004 the band went on a highly acclaimed tour of Turkey with performances in Istanbul, Diyrbakir and Malatya. They also recorded music for the TV-thriller "Danslärarens återkomst" (Henning Mankell) where they contributed with "Mute" (from "Bestiario") as the film's main theme among others. One could also hear their music in the theatre production "Arma Irma" (Staffan Göthe) at Hagateatern and in the award winning short film "Ryppar".During 2004 they received grants from the Arts Grants Committee to rehearse new music that Per had been working on since 2002. The material was recorded and the making of their third CD "Bestiario" commenced. During that period they managed to fit in two tours of Germany, put together by the German management company "Nordpool" performing in such places as Berlin, Lübeck, Hamburg, Bremen and Freiburg among others. In connection with these tours the band also appeared in Copenhagen, Denmark and on a tour to Luxembourg. The Grammy nominated third album "Bestiario" was released in 2005 on the Stockholm based label "Xource/Network Entertainment Group". The band then did a first performance at the time-honoured club "Nalen" in Stockholm in connection with the record release. In summer 2005 they toured Turkey again and made performances in Istanbul, Kayseri and Kars. They also made a tour in Germany where they performed at the Traumzeit-festival among others. In september they made a tour to Ireland with performances in Dublin at the Dublin Fringe festival, and also a tour to Norway. They also appeared as the final act in the Swedish radios Musikstad Göteborg with a live-broadcasted show.In 2006 "Bestiario was nominated for a Swedish Grammy award.During 2006 they will make tours to Russia and Norway again, and to China for the first time.
