About Me

"Deborah Crooks pours stiff shots of brains, soul and guts into her compositions..."-Flavorpill.Singing about faith, love and loss, Deborah is an intimate and edgy artist whose work is dedicated to peace and the process of liberation. With lyric-writing skills are honed by a lifetime of writing, world travel and study of yoga and Buddhism, she’s widely published as an essayist, journalist and poet. The Santa Cruz native released her first EP "5 Acres" in 2003, tunes from which have been included on compilation CDs. 2005 saw new collaborations with B.Z. Lewis, resulting in the tracks "You Are Home" which has received national airplay and is featured on the Java with Jahvalin Indie Artist CD 2005 (Los Angeles) and Indie Music For Life Compilation (2007), "The More I Know" (2005) and "All this Love," (2006). Deborah showcased at the 2006 Millenium Music Conference, the 2005 RockerGirl Magazine Music Convention, in Austin, TX, and was a featured performer at the 2007 Harmony Festival. She’s appeared at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC, Arlene’s Grocery in New York and the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. She returned to the studio in 2007, to release another EP "Turn it all Red," and is again working with producer Ben Bernstein (formerly of New Monsoon) in 2008. Oft compared to Mazzy Star, Chrissie Hynde and the Cowbow Junkies, her sound draws on equal parts rock and roll and the songwriter tradition.
