Yellow House recording artist Paula Maya is often compared to Bjork, Neil Young
and The Beatles. Her new record "Paula", produced by Pat Hewitt and released in October 2007, is receiving great reviews, both within the music industry and with the general public. A widespread response to her music is: “It’s very unique in a very good way.†“My true love is to write songs that help me, and hopefully my listeners, to get in touch with different emotions on a subconscious level, in a fun and deep wayâ€.
As a songwriter she takes the concept of eclecticism to a new level, incorporating
many musical influences: Jazz, Medieval, Electronica and Brazilian, with her band's Rock, Blues and Funk sound. Based in Seattle and together since 1999, the band features: Ben Smith (Heart / Ann & Nancy Wilson) on drums, Pat Hewitt (Doug Kershaw / Rangehoods) on guitar and Dave Pascal (5th Avenue Theatre) on bass.
In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she grew up, Paula studied piano at the Federal University of Music and graduated from the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in music theory. She was a student of the conductor Leonardo Sá, and received Medieval singing lessons taught by European teachers. The turning point in her career came when she went to study with legendary Brazilian pianist /arranger Luizinho Eça. In Seattle Paula studied voice with Maestro David Kyle (Elton John, Paul McCartney, Eddie Vedder).
Before moving from Rio de Janeiro to the US to pursue her solo career, Paula had already played with the historic “Orquestra Tabajaraâ€, and had opened for Djavan
and Caetano Veloso. In the US she has opened for The Presidents of the United States of America, Tab Benoit and Vinicius Cantuária, and has released four solo albums: “New Perspectiveâ€, 1995, through Wow Mom Records (Houston), “Resurrectionâ€, 2003, and “Paulaâ€, 2007, through Yellow House Records (Seattle). Her EP “Resurrection 1st Half†was released independently in 2000. The title track “Resurrection†is featured in the movie “The Learning Curveâ€, 2001. Paula Maya received an award in 2006 for Best Brazilian Songwriter by the Seattle Weekly. Her musical team has been invaluable to her success. It includes the renowned drummer /producer Téo Lima, who has worked extensively with Dionne Warwick, Djavan and Ivan Lins, who won a 2006 Latin Grammy Award under Lima’s music direction.
