Sitting BullWhen I feel beaten in my battle for our missing children & against Lyme Disease, I remind myself how I felt the first time an elder told me,"The blood of your ancestors' runs through you...you have nothing to worry about, my girl."

Pretends EagleWith countless movies and television appearances to his credit, actor, Wes Studi, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, has blazed the trail for Native Americans in the entertainment industry by becoming the most recognized Native American actor on Turtle Island.Growing up on the in Oklahoma, Studi became fluent in both English and his Native, Cherokee language. He went to the Chilocco Indian School as a child and endured the hardships of life in Indian Country. Despite the big odds against him, Studi still took the chance of leaving everything that he knew for his shot at appearing on the big screen in Hollywood.“I was looking for something else…to create a new life. Since I was focused on new interests, I made an effort to study acting. I took the time and money to invest in myself so I could have a profession. I needed to have a career,” said the soft-spoken, actor who began his acting career around age forty.Studi has been in the entertainment industry for twenty-years, which unfortunately after all this time, still does not offer much more to Native American actors. And there are times when Native actors are popular and times when they are not. Fortunately and obviously, this reality has not stopped Studi from pursuing his career in acting. In Studi’s most recent movie role, he plays the great Comanche leader, Chief Buffalo Hump in the on CBS mini-series, Comanche Moon, which was written by Academy Award and Golden Globe winners, Larry McMurty and Diana Ossana, who also served as the series’ Executive Producers.Studi said about his role as Chief Buffalo Hump in which he only spoke Comanche, “ He was the leader of the Penateka Band of Comanche, Buffalo Hump was the elder of the group, a war leader. He led his people against the Texas Rangers where he experienced the interaction of combat. He lead the attack to Austin which lead all the way to the ocean…This is a story taken from history within their [McMurty and Ossana] story.”Ossana, in a conference call before the premiere, described Comanche Moon as a fable, a historical fiction which is intertwined with authentic Comanche traditions. She spoke proudly about how the movie’s Comanche actors and consultant were not paid during the time they were partaking in their Comanche traditions. Such as the ceremonial preparation that takes place before an eagle feather is worn. Ossana also excitedly noted that the eagle feathers used in the movie were real, a big first for television westerns with a strong Native American genre.Studi has appeared many films full of Native Americans themes such as: Crazy Horse, The Last of the Mohicans, Skinwalkers and Dances with Wolves. However, Mystery Man and Heat were not about Native American films. Studi believes and appreciates that he was chosen for these roles because he is an actor who happened to be Native American, not one who was chosen just because he was Native American. These two roles for Studi, were great achievements as a Native American actorThis multi-talented, actor can be found also enjoying things like, sculpting beautiful stone carvings, writing songs or strumming the his bass guitar to his wife, Maura’s vocals in their band, Fire Cats of Discord. Studi was also a member of American Indian Movement [AIM] and was at the 1973 Standoff at Wounded Knee.Studi spoke about his bright future, “I see the future as being abundant… living comfortably. I would like to like to leave the legacy, ‘To be the best you can in whatever field you settle in. It is good to know that you that you gave it your all.’…And before I die, I would like to win a major award in this biz, like an Emmy or an Oscar…to show my participation in this world.“It would be another first…for a Native American to win an Emmy or an Oscar Award in a starring role…Studi has the class, talent and experience to make it happen…Just you, wait and see. My mom wrote about the Seventh Generation in NARF's Visions of the Future in honor of our Lakota ancestsors, like those pictured above who survived the "Battle of Little Big Horn." "Visions of the Future" is a beautiful display of art by the Seventh Generation whose artwork shows the beauty of our culture & their own stories as modern day Indians.Madonna - Vogue

Add to My Profile | More Videos The Native American Times-11/30/2007Paper edition-front pageNAMA Awards offer night of spectacle, music Tara Pretends EagleThis year the Ninth Annual Native American Music Awards, [NAMA’s] were held in Seneca Country which is just a short walk from one of the miraculous wonders of the world: Niagara Falls. The atmosphere at this year’s NAMA’s was just as spectacular as the falls that flowed so close by. The Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara, NY presented a classy ambiance for the NAMA’s to honor Native musicians as well as feature concert performances by most of the award winners.A last minute change in co-hosts brought in the highly acclaimed musician, Joanne Shenandoah, a member of Iroquois Confederacy and Keith Secola, the Ojibwe multi-award winning musician to fill in graciously behind the microphone. Both Shenandoah and Secola also took home their own NAMA’s that evening as well. Pic by me : )(not in paper ed) Shenandoah, a GRAMMY Award Winner and ten-time NAMA winner was also honored that evening with the NAMA “Lifetime Achievement Award,” which she shared respectively with accomplished fellow musician, Bill Miller, a Mohican from Wisconsin. (not in paper ed) Secola along with Ojibwe, Elder, Karen Drift took home the NAMA for “Best Linguistic Recording” for their CD “Anishinabemoin,” which is a traditional instructional language CD accompanied by Secola’s music. Secola now has won seven NAMA’s in eight years. The 2007 NAMA ”Artist of the Year” went to Arvel Bird, the Southern Paiute-Metis’, fiddle player, who humbly accepted his award and thanked his wife for all that she has done to make it all happen for him. by Kimberly Acosta, NAMA (not in paper ed) "I appreciate being recognized by the Native American Music Awards as “Artist of the Year”. It was an accomplishment of a team effort from the fans to the media to my record label. What I do with my music is an effort to bring honor and recognition to the Southern Paiutes. This is a cap to a great year and the beginning of more! 'Puhnekay' vawsoom' (I'll see you again)," Bird said about his newest NAMMY. Bird also won the 2006 NAMA for “Best Instrumental Recording.”Hand drum group, Pipestone, most of the members from the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Reservation won this years NAMA for “Record of the Year” for their CD Good Ol’ Fashioned NDN Lovin’. This group of young Ojibwe men gave an outstanding performance that evening which was a great display of traditional music blended with humorous lyrics about Indian love. pic by me ; )(not in paper ed) There were appearances by an array of fellow Native musicians who presented the NAMA’s awards or introduced fellow performing musicians. Invited to present were Actor & Brule’s Traditional Lakota Drummer, Moses Brings Plenty, Dawn Karima Pettigrew, Cherokee/Creek singer, radio host and Cherokee, Flutist & Flute maker, Michael Searching Bear, to name a few.Searching Bear, also a 2006 NAMA nominee, was honored to be invited to be a part of the NAMA’s this year. He also said he thought, “This was their best show yet! I believe they should find a home for the NAMA’s and Niagara seems like a wonderful place! The NAMA’s is a great place to see old friends and make new ones! A definite asset to the Native American music realm! It is a wonderful place to share ideas and stories in which it will continue to bring depth to our genre.”The incredible depths of Native genre music was evident throughout the show which also featured performances by Turtle Island’s best; Canada’s First Nations, Derek Miller and Digging Roots, Jana, Lumbee also won the NAMA for “Best Pop Performance.” And Corn Bred, New York’s only All-Native Blues Band rocked in front of their home town crowd as well as took home the NAMA for “Best Blues/Jazz Recording” that evening. One of the highlight performances of the evening was the short, yet beautifully powerful, set performed by Joanne Shenandoah who was accompanied by her sister and daughter. The intensity and gentleness of her music seemed to be a spiritual reminder of how important Native music is to all nations and just how far Native musicians have come especially in the last ten years. Each performance and NAMA Award presented brought with it a unique style of music that was blended with traditional Native music. It was a night filled with Native dancers and Native languages which were sung in many lyrics throughout the evening. The on-going laughter from the audience was wondrous to hear, just as the falls eternally flowing down the street were. The laughter of Natives enjoying themselves throughout the evening definitely made this celebration of Native music complete. All are Clevelanders who vanished just minutes from Browns Stadium.Unfortunately, a few Browns fans had to be mean and disrespectful to me while I handed out flyers alongside my pastor - ruining the experience for all of us.One man told others not to take the flyers because the pastor was Amish. Then he told people crossing the street to ignore me. He was well aware that I was Gina's father. I and others were shocked at this man's behavior. He wasn't the only one, either. But I do not want to go on about other fans, because it really is too hurtful.I, too, am a big Cleveland sports fan and thought this would be a great opportunity. Never did I think fans would take the flyers, look at them and throw them on the ground! I believe we got the word out to some; however, after I was treated so badly and the flyers were being thrown on the ground, we all left.I would like to thank those fans who supported us by taking the flyers and saying kind words. I would also like to thank the ticket scalper who stopped selling his tickets to pass out our flyers.I hope none of these Browns fans ever has to experience what we have: to have his child vanish in Cleveland, never to be seen again. I am desperate to find my daughter, Gina, and to help my friends find their missing family members.I certainly expected more from my fellow Browns fans.Felix DeJesus, Clevelandhttp://www.survivorsvictimsoftragedy.org/news.
