After completing a degree in psychology I spent a year writing songs and honing my musical skills. That lead me into writing music for television which I did professionally from 1983. I composed music for over 70 programmes and series, most of them for the Welsh language channel S4C. The work also included music for the networked family drama series We Are Seven, some documentaries for Cannel 4 and award winning collaborations with art animator Clive Walley.In 1995 I took a lecturing post at University of Wales Bangor School of Music where I ran an MA in Creative Music Technology as well as modules in Music and Ideas, Jazz, Music and Film and others. I was external examiner at Liverpool University's Institute of Popular Music for three years and also taught a World Music module there.In 2003 I stopped teaching and brought out the album Cyfnos with Acoustique on Sain records. Since then I have gigged widely with the band and our excellent singer Lleuwen Steffan. We've played in Paris, in London's Vortex club, and frequently on Welsh TV and radio. In June 2007 we were rapturously received at the Genting Jazz Festival in Malaysia. I also play sax with Banda Bacana who are a great Afro-Latin outfit from Bangor.In 2005 I spent 3 months in Brazil researching and playing music as well a making a documentary on young people's music for the NGO Estrela. I also conducted fieldwork there which has contributed to a PhD thesis on musical accessibility, which is now successfully completed.At present I am teaching World Music Cultures at Bangor University School of Music and jazz piano at the Mathias Centre. I also have my own trio modestly called The Dr Jay Trio. It features myself on piano, vocals and percussion and a couple of young guns; Joe Taylor (drums) and Huw Fon Williams (bass). We play my compositions (and one of Huw's), some jazz improvisations based on well known numbers and some other groovy stuff...
