Based in and around Snowdonia, Welsh Afrobeat pioneers Drymbago (pronounced Drumbago) play an explosive mix of raw Afro and Celtic styles. Drawing influences from West Africa and Ethiopia this heavy horns and percussive 10 piece have gigged extensively in Wales and the North having played at numerous clubs and festivals including The Green Man, The International Eistedfod, The Square Festival, Vibrations and Racubah! and have had numerous appearances on S4C and airplay on Radio 1 Wales and others, building a reputation for delivering a unique dancefloor sound which whilst paying homage to its musical sources aims to create a fusion that also reflects its own culture and environment..
The band have been together for six years, and, having recruited a new brass section are close to releasing their first independently produced album, which should be ready for release by late spring, 2009. The album was recorded live on a 16 track tape recorder in the old magistrates court in Blaenau Ffestiniog. After a few failed attempts at recording digitally, the band realised that the only way to capture the true essence of their music was to emulate the recording techniques of the 70’s and to use original analogue recording equipment. Finding the right space to record was an essential aspect of the sound, allowing the band to play live and capture the energy straight on to tape.
The tracks in the player above are sample of those tape recordings, unprocessed and raw. The album will be mixed professionally during the next few months and released on CD soon after.Drymbago are touring the album between April and September of 2009.
