The only Double Bass player in the village

About Me

I play bass - Double Bass and Bass Guitar. I know lots of people who can play loads of instruments really well. I cannot. I admire them, but I just play the bass. Would I have it any other way? Not really. Nope. Holding down the bottom end. Where it's at. All that twiddly stuff? Not my problem.
The tracks are :-
Can 1 is a thing I wrote and played. I just put the drums on it. Progress is so slow that I thought I might as well put it up just to justify the 6 hours I put into it. I will probably change the drums at a later point. If you are still reading this you might want to consider getting out more. It is rough rough rough at the moment, and is in the process of being changed when I can get my backside into gear (prob 2009) but it is what it is, as Gloria Gaynor might say.
Candylion - Gruff Rhys http://www.myspace.com/candylionmusic. Me on Bass.Myfanwy - Acoustique/Black Absynth remix. Me on Bass and atmospheric squeaky thing (Bass harmonics if you are geeky enough to care.)
Tywod - new song from Acoustique - me on bass. We are working on a new album but are pacing ourselves, these things cannot be rushed.
If you like what you hear and need a bassist to go "Thump Thump Thump" at the bottom of a track, give me a shout. If you need a bassist to go Thump Thack-a-ta-thack-a-ta thump widdle widdle Thack-a-ta then I can put you on to some friends of mine.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: Imhavingenougtroublejustdoingthis.com
Band Members: I’ve played with some people who are famous and awesome, some who are slightly famous, some who are thankfully obscure, some who are not famous but should be, some who are famous but, let’s face it, have no right to be (I hear they speak highly of me as well!). Shall I gush about individuals? Well it IS Myspace after all. No, most of the time, it’s just about feeling the groove, no more, no less. Sometimes it’s just about being paid (ugh, how vulgar, imagine having to earn a living). The best bit is just locking into a group of players and letting it sound like it will sound. Orchestral, theater, rock, jazz, folk, ummmmm............ and stuff. Not necessarily in that order.
Influences: The Bible - and then the rest of them. Probably the first was listening to dad singing the bass lines to the hymns in Chapel and wanting to sing like dad did, then I noticed that the pipe organ was playing the same lines, but two octaves lower. How cool is that?! Just like to play low notes. Of course a shout goes out (as the young people say) to the inevitables like Jaco, Jamerson, Pino. Can I play like them? I should say, why would I want to sound like anybody else? The reality is that I'd love to, but........ well........y'know. JS Bach (best bass lines EVER), my 'cello teacher for booting me out and making me start with a Double Bass teacher. Robert Sledge - bass, plectrum and distortion, who'da thunk! Really enjoying the rhythm section work on the Corrine Bailey Rae album at the mo'. Very tasty. M'eshell Ndegeocello - maximum groove-age. Any good drummers who just FEEL where it's going, no need to analyse it, just go. I'm badly influenced by bass web sites and ebay. They make me buy more kit. I have no control.
Sounds Like: A slightly tired bassist who is having a good time sending out positive low frequency vibes.
Record Label: They have not found me yet. Cannot think why.
Type of Label: None

When is a donut not a donut?

Did a gig in Aberystwyth last night with Huw Warren and Andy Hay. Aber is about 2 hours drive from HQ and is a really nice run (apart from that bit around Corris - ugh. I'm sure Corris is great but th...

It was a blast.

Field Day, Summer Sundae + Green Man.I must admit that I sort of fell off the bike in the logging of my meals over the summer, but in the interests of closure I am going to finish it. The Field Day f...

Trocobrahma

Well, this was my induction into touring proper, like. We had a double decker bus, with 14 bunks and 2 lounges with tellies and DVDs etc, a kitchen, a bog and a trailer for the kit. I realise that for...

Lattitude

All that Glastonbury lacked, Lattitude had. It's like the festival Glastonbury forgot to be. Culinary highlights were a really nice Mushroom Stroganoff that had the most disgusting wooden hard Auberg...

So, Malaysia. Top food destination? Believe it. I won't bore you with general airline food, but there was a great moment when Jochen (keyboard top friends) was woken up by a statuesque Scandinavian...

Dissapointing breakfast

Did the Glasgow gig with Gruff. Took 4.5 hours to get there, not as bad as I'd feared. On the culinary front I had quite a nice curry for supper but was let down by the Naan bread. The curry was good ...

Had a nice meal of grilled chicken with fried rice at the Liverpool gig with Gruff. As we were standing waiting Nath the drummer said that NATO (that what we call the rhythm section because we hit wit...
