"The Earth is hurting, it's people are hurting. It needs some help. Today, not tomorrow.." - Srs
"Ear candy. The radio waves are stuffed with it. Brainless lyrics over predictable beats erode our collective consciousness. In this dismal din a few bright lights are borne from the abyss, rising to shine a new light upon the neglected.
There is a history of progressive thought in hip hop music, even if it is not easily seen. It is the nature of those who struggle to seek change, to make the world a better place. Those who argue that Rap music is nothing but guns and sex present a ridiculous duplicity, as they sit in their homes and watch television shows that are loaded with the very same. And as television bombards our youth with images of "success" like big cars, artificially enhanced humans, and energy gobbling mansions, is it any wonder these things become the emphasis?
For more than the last decade, Mak and SRS have been using their unconventional approach to hip hop to change minds, and the world, for the better. Every song, whether serious or comical, delivers an honest message of hope. Hope that after hearing it, that somebody, somewhere will do just one thing to improve the situation. And one by one, the world will improve.
