To me, freedom of speech is something that represents the very dignity of what a human being is…That’s what marks us off from the stones and the stars. You can speak freely. It is really the thing that marks us as just below the angels. - Mario Savio 1942-1996
I was born on a river sailing upstream
The sun set behind me in the west
Drifting east on a watermelon rind
The creator cut me from a mold of truth untold
So I can walk through worlds of lies
With a look that's cold
I still can't behold lies
I wear shades to block they rays
Its madness/ cover my eyes to stop the craze
On the night of my conception the stars was fixed
Asked Cassandra Wilson she said check with Mars you dig?
I'm a child of the moon and daughter of Oshun
With a gift to rock mics shake bable and roll egun egun
Father Abraham had many sons and daughters
And more than one of us can walk on water...
I am the Alley Angel Artist, Aphropik. Aphropik because, well that's my rap name and Angelic because my momma named me Angela because she wanted an Angel. I love hip hop music and that's all I want to do with my life. I want to effect a positive change in the world through it. I look at my career and all the things I go through as an independent artist as a pursuit of true happiness. I am from Chicago but you can't tell by the flow. Its universal. And no that wasn't suppose to rhyme. I have released four musical compilations independently (Abracadabra & Other Magic Words (2003), Say My Name (2004), S.park T.he A.rtist R.evolution (2005) and Aphropik's Phreaken Mixtape (2006)).
..
Some major artists that influence me on a regular are Bob Marley, Cassandra Wilson (even though I don't have a copy of Thunderbird, hint hint), Black Star (even though Mos and Talib are doing their independent thing I still consider them a unit), Common Sense (he will always be Common Sense to me!) and Rah Digga (I love the way she spits). I am feeling Shawnna from DTP right now. I love her actually. I think Jean Grea got some flow too. She be ripping. Let's see who else? L-boogie of course. Well classically you know I love Del the Funky Homosapien, Wu-Tang (They have this new indie compilation like album that is the shit! It has this cool rainbow W on it, kind of looks like the apple macintosh computer logo), Chemical Brothers, Jungle Brothers, The Fugees (Yeah they got back together!). Check the slideshow under "influences" to see some others.
