“Let the Beauty we love be what we do†~~Rumi
Selewa pronounced (Sheh leh WAH) is a Yoruba name that means Creator of Beauty. I am Selewa, a self taught adornment specialist. I have been making jewelry for 10 years. I have always loved to adorn myself and I have always loved adorning other people. I believe that Every Body should be decorated, if for no other reason than it’s harder to feel bad when you’re all dolled up.
Adornment is always associated with the “special†parts of life. We decorate things that we think are special. We get dressed up nicely for special occasions. We tattoo and pierce things to remind us of special moments in our lives. So why not wear jewelry that reminds you and the rest of the world that YOU are special, and that YOU are worthy of being decorated!
By adorning yourself you remind yourself and the rest of the world that you are special. You also set a visual standard for how you expect to be treated. If you’re treating YOURSELF well, others will see that they should ALSO treat you well. I believe in teaching by example.
My goal with my jewelry making is to create things that feed and fuel a desire for beauty. I want to inspire you to remember your specialness each and every day. I want you to remember that “you are fearfully and wonderfully madeâ€
My Philosophy::
Popular culture has given us a number of images that represent the ideal body. The vast majority of us fall some where outside of the tiny little box of perfection that the media gives us to work with. We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on diets and gym memberships to try to reach this “body nirvana†and we often fall short of the mark.
I believe that it is important to love and celebrate the bodies that we have now, not just the bodies that we’re working towards. Just think how wonderful it would be to love the body that you were blessed with.; those hands that allow you to hold your babies or propel your wheelchair, the legs and feet that carry you to and fro, the waist that has expanded and contracted and expanded again throughout your life.
I believe that adorning the body is a healing practice. That can allow us to shine a light on ourselves in a beautiful way.
I believe that NO Body is too large or too small or too old or too ANYTHING to be adorned!
