Having released their first album "Between the City and the Stratosphere" to strong regional acclaim, Maybe Pete have gone about the business of methodically barrelling their way to the top of the straight ahead rock heap, making a solid name for themselves from NYC and Hoboken through Central and Northern Jersey, and - luckily for us - down to the Shore. Frankie McGrath makes no bones about his Springsteen influences, but you can dismiss any notions you may have that this means derivative songwriting. There's a bit here for everyone in the melding of post-punk Downtown energy, Dylan-esque lyrics, and a Boss-y narrative arc to the tunes that Frankie and Kelly McGrath, Marc Gambino and Johnny Macko bring to the stage. At times they evoke an almost Midwestern pathos, at times the sound is utterly urban commando, somewhere between the Replacements and the Ramones. Maybe Pete is like a freight train headed through the industrial wastelands but always arriving at the Big City right on time for Saturday night.
