My passion for drumming began at an early age. Back in 1973 when I was 10 years old my father was the drummer in a band called the Blackberry Booze Band. The band was fronted by a cat named John Lyon and after a few line-up changes, including the addition of Steve Van Zandt (who later became Miami Steve then Little Steven) the band changed its name to Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and became the house band at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ playing every Thursday & Sunday night.
These days my father is a member of Nicky Addeos's band and can be found performing with various bands around NJ. As for the Asbury Jukes, Joe Bellia is the Drummer and does a fantastic job night after night carrying the torch my father once held. Joe is an incredible Drummer with rock solid timing, fantastic chops and all round nice guy behind a very demanding leader. I know his job isn't easy but he makes it look fun and he is an asset to the Jukes.
My father, Mr. Popeye (his nickname since the early 70s with the Jukes) appears on the first 2 albums by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and many Greatest Hits albums since.
- I Don't Want To Go Home (1976) 1st album
- This Time It's For Real (1977) 2nd album
As for me, I did the entire school band thing including 4 years of Marching Band, Concert Band and Stage Band. I also marched in 3 Drum and Bugle Corps throughout the 80s for 9 years both as a member and an instructor. The school band era helped me understand the art of drumming and how to read music but the Drum Corps experience is invaluable. I learned more about discipline and musicianship in 1 year with Drum Corps than I did in 4 years of high school.
Ahhh....the Drum Corps days, early 1980 something. 10 Snare Drummers playing as one. Every stroke identical, every stick height the same and we moved as one. We sounded like 1 drummer playing at a very high volume! Very articulate, clean and precise. Practice until you get it right then practice until you can't get it wrong!
During my junior and senior years of school I was in and out of several garage bands doing the Battle Of The Bands circuit. Once I found musicians that were almost as dedicated, we graduated to the Bar Band circuit and spent the next decade playing in every hole in the wall juke joint bar around. Unfortunately, we played the same 50 songs as the other 25 area bar bands so nothing really set us apart from the rest.
FAST FORWARD 20 SOMETHING YEARS
Now I'm with LIVING PROOF and all thats about to change although I'm still an "Animal" but now I'm married and a father who's performing great music with stellar musicians without all the drama and egomaniac bullshit.
