Etymological detective work has explained many a punk band, and Nunzilla is no exception. According to that pillar of strength, the Oxford English Dictionary (which all true punks have read), Godzilla’s original name, “Gojira,†was actually a transliteration of the Japanese words for gorilla (“goriraâ€) and whale (“kujiraâ€). The “odz†sound in the middle of the word was arguably a product of mistaken English translation. Therefore, the “God†in Godzilla, like Schrödinger’s Cat, could be as accidental as a cheese poof! Somehow, that hasn’t stopped these four Phoenix yahoos from running with the idea and traipsing around in habits and frocks under the pretense of eating souls. The cheek! If the Pope isn’t quaking with rage at the existence of this band, then Phoenix’s long and hallowed history of producing gimmick schlock rock groups (beginning with Alice Cooper) has been for nothing. Check out Nunzilla’s wacky grind of punk irreverence today, or at least before the Inquisition squads kick in the doors and fill our nostrils with the stench of their fragrant roasted ape-whale flesh.
