Sounds Like: Slide Family
Aggiungi al mio pofilo | altri VideoThe group, which was invented by Beppe Calamosca and Mauro Ottolini, is the only one for its singular formation, its extraordinary repertoire and the countless variety of sounds and timbre they can propose.
Unique in its gender, the Slide Family is composed by seven among the best Italian trombonists who, in turn, alternate in playing the tube, the baritone saxhorn, the accordion, the didgeridoo, accompanied only by the drums.
Don’t think this band is the usual group proposing traditional standard, with the continuous alternating of solos and virtuosities… The principal aim of the Slide is to create a show which surprises and astonishes the audience for its sound, which is able to transform the thirties’ marching band sound into the great Jimmy Hendrix’s psychedelic rock.
As a matter of fact, Ottolini has adopted some elements of the electric guitar, of the bass and of vintage keyboards to the trombone and bass tuba and he has been able to create a sound scale which gives the band a psychedelic rock character.
So, in some executions, the use of instrumentations such as amplifiers, wawa, twisters, mutes are determinant.
The Slide Family is so creative that they often take the instruments to pieces and use them with glasses, paper plates and other elements, creating never heard sounds and reproducing with the instruments a treble voices chorus or the deafening and metronometric noise of a metal and mechanical industry.
The Slide Family proposes original excerpts and arrangements which have been expressly thought and written for the band by Mauro Ottolini and Beppe Calamosca, together with some completely renewed and transformed excerpts of famous authors such as Duke Ellington, Joe Zawinul, T. Monk, Steve Swallow…
There often appear some sounds which are typical of Kletzmer music and Balkan popular music, both emphasized by Beppe Calamosca’s accordion and by the use of bombardinos, instruments used only for popular and classical music.
We can say that the band is inspired by musicians such as Frank Zappa, Carla Blay, Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy and Sun Ra, more than by J.J. & Kay’s historical trombone ensemble or slide Hampton groups.
