I have known Michele for many years now and in that time, I have gotten to understand his voice as a musician and as a person. It has been a real joy of mine to watch and listen to his development that now leads us to this most excellent recording. I first heard Michele while doing a summer jazz workshop in Castelfranco Veneto. I knew from the first moment I heard him play that he had a wonderful natural talent that just flowed effortlessly through the horn. In my years as a player/teacher, I have often heard such young talent but I can count on only one hand how many of those players have taken it to the next level like Michele has. He has truly bridged the gap between melodic and harmonic intensity. He is a compositional improviser, full of respect for tradition and yet has a true sense of adventure. Throughout this entire CD, Polga demonstrates his maturity and ability to pace and space his solos with the flow of the rhythm section. His compositions all show depth in experience and each sequenced as if a long suite. Each are balanced for dynamic and rhythmic contrast. Usually, the mark of a good melody is one that stays with you long after the music has stopped. Each of Michele's compositions had me doing a lot of singing afterwards (much to the disappointment of my neighbors). Walter, Stefano, and Paolo played wonderfully as you can obviously hear and were picked wisely by Michele. They played great individually, as a team, and also comping for Michele and his writing. I am honored to have the chance to write about such a fantastic recording, especially when it’s by a dear friend and respected colleague - Michele Polga. I feel that this CD proves that Michele is a new and gifted voice on the tenor sax internationally. I hope you enjoy listening to this CD as much as I do. I'm sure there will be plenty more in his future, lucky for us.
