Tribute to John Lee Hooker
John Lee Hooker was one of the greatest figures in blues history, recording over 75 albums in his lifetime. Born in 1920 in Mississippi, he had his first huge recording hit in 1948 – the million selling "Boogie Chillen," which defined his guitar playing technique unique to the blues as a droning, hypnotic, one-chord electric, timeless sound that would eventually become famous the world over. Hooker moved to the Bay Area in the late 1970s and it remained his home until his death in 2001. This tribute will feature members of his long-standing San Francisco group, the famed Coast to Coast Band, who will perform material from the Hooker songbook. This momentous event will also feature guest appearances by John Lee Hooker’s daughter, Zakiya Hooker, his nephew, Archie Lee Hooker, and singer Kathi McDonald. "Nothing but the best. Later for the rest."
When Archie Lee Hooker Jr. left Memphis, TN in 1989, to care for his uncle 'The Godfather of Blues: John Lee Hooker; he had no idea of all the things he would learn, the turns that his life would take, and that in five short years he would begin to follow in his uncle's footsteps. Archie Lee begin his own singing career and then earned the right to open up and tour with John Lee during the last years of his life.
Living with John Lee and caring for him for over 11 years, Archie Lee learned where true blues originate, in ones heart and soul. In his music, he does what any good blues man does, sing about his life, the people and the things that have inspired him so he can inspire others. Through his music, Archie Lee wants to give to others knowledge, courage, inspiration, joy and especially love.
Together, with THE COAST TO COAST BLUES BAND (formerly John Lee Hookers band), they created music that marries the old delta blues with some of their new sounds of today. This blues has a rhythm of its own, where the music, with its solos and lyrics will illuminate your heart, touch your soul and make you want to dance.
Archie Lee's songs recall the melodies, the attitudes and the roots of his life. Archie, who was born in Inverness, Mississippi later moved to Memphis, Tennessee. The bright lights and unique sounds of the city captured his imagination. As a teenager, Archie attended church and sang in the choir and also formed the gospel group, The Marvelous Five. The group sang in churches in and around Memphis, as well as New Orleans, Louisiana.
Archie's next stop on his musical journey was California. There he joined his uncle, the legendary John Lee Hooker, doing live performances. In 1995, Archie Lee toured Europe for the first time. His live performance at the Castlebar Blues Festival in Ireland electrified the audience. His first CD, Suicide Blues was recorded there with Carl Wyatt and the Rhythm Kings. This project revealed Archie's gift for song writing and an understated vocal style all his own. Archie Lee's vision creates songs that have classic familiarity and groundbreaking qualities that move the listeners to yearn for more.
Far From Home, Archie's second CD by the Archie Lee Hooker, Jr. /Shawn Gonzales Band is a blend of American roots Blues and world beat influences, which takes listeners on a delightful journey through new musical territory.
Archie Lee Hooker The Best of the third CD from Archie Lee Hooker Jr. and the Blues for Hire Band, is a compilation from his previous releases featuring the unique artistry of Carl Wyatt on Delta Slide Guiter. As you listen to Archie sing, you'll notice that each song tells a story. Archie puts his feelings and emotions into each song & when you hear him sing, you will understand his roots, the kind of life he lived and where he is now. You may shed a few tears, or you may even dance a few steps; but believe me, no matter what you do, you will want more.
