JAZZ BLUES R&B and FUNK
An emerging talent on the keys, David Sobel has impressed audiences around the country with his passionate and expressive playing. Currently a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, he performs regularly with a number of the region's best, including Little Wolf and the Hellcats, Archie Lee Hooker Jr., Willie G, Ron Perry (Susan Tedeschi, The Whispers) and Bernard Anderson (Queen Ida). You can catch David performing with some great bands at popular venues and events such as Biscuits and Blues, Lou's Pier 47, the Caspar Inn, JJ's of San Jose, Rasselas Jazz Club, the Sonoma Jazz+ Festival (headlined by Herbie Hancock and BB King), the Pittsburg Seafood Festival, the Oakland Art and Soul Festival, the Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival and the Black Diamond Blues Festival.Before moving to San Francisco in mid-2003, David was a sought-after sideman and leader of several of his own bands in New York City and Washington, DC. In New York, he played rooms such as The Bitter End, The Lonestar Roadhouse, and Dan Lynch's. While living in the DC area, he performed at dozens of venues and festivals locally and around the country, including the Kennedy Center, the State Theatre, Blues Alley, the Baltimore Blues Festival, the Red River Revel in Louisana, and the Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. In addition to leadng a jazz/funk trio, he was a regular member of several prominent bands, including those of Catfish Hodge, Annie Sidley and Janine Wilson. He appeared as a sideman with many others including Steve Wolf and Swingspeak (Danny Gatton, Charlie Musslewhite, Bo Didley, Dr. John), Chuck Underwood (Patti Labelle), Emory Diggs (Eva Cassidy) and John Previti (Danny Gatton, Charlie Byrd, Rick Whitehead, Guitar Junior)Originally a horn player, David's first professional gigs were in high school as part of a brass quintet and jazz band. During college, he performed at engagements with his own jazz quartet and played with and managed the Columbia Jazz Band under the directon of multi-Grammy winner Don Sickler. David is primarily self-taught on the piano and has been playing piano, organ and keyboards professionally since graduating college in 1989.David is working on an album of his own songs, with a CD release expected later this year.
