Erik Ask-Upmark

The Nordic Harper!

About Me

Talented multiinstrumentalist and professional musician, Erik Ask-Upmark discovered the harp through a long-lasting love affair with Irish music. Lately he has focused on how music from his own cultural sphere - that of Scandinavia - would sound on the Celtic harp. In October 2007 his first solo album will be released, incidentally the first album ever featuring exclusively Swedish folk music on solo harp! Erik has earned the official title of "Riksspelman" (Master musician of the Realm) and is also a master player of another little-known instrument, the unique Swedish bagpipes. He also plays the Baroque double harp (Arpa doppia) with ensembles such as Concerto Copenhagen and Ensemble Mare Balticum. He performs early music and Nordic roots music both as a soloist and with his groups Svanevit, Dråm and Falsobordone and tours all over the world.

Some reviews (read more on the Nordic Tradition website):

"Ask-Upmark's playing style is lively and full of life, and while you wouldn't normally associate harps with dances, in his hands it's a natural fit. Even the slower pieces have a sense of flow and emotion. This might be the first Swedish harp album, but judging by the results, it shouldn't be the last!" - Dirty Linen, USA

"Allor e'ro a allor bir'o" means It never is, and never will be so wonderful. Well, I hope it will, "Himlens Polska" features some heavenly tunes and some extraterrestrial playing. It is a nice start for more!" - FolkWorld, UK

"A very listenable set of well-varied tunes played with fine, sensitive fluidity and feel for the tune." - fROOTS magazine, UK
