Sergio Krakowski was born on December 18, 1979 and began playing pandeiro when he was 15 years old. He learned to play informally with friends, but quickly realized the richness of the instrument and began to dedicate himself more seriously to it. He is self-taught and developed his own technique, based on various influences such as Rafael Rabello, Jorginho do Pandeiro and Marcos Suzano.Freedom of expression is a primary focus in Sergio's musical path. He believes that the pandeiro has even more potenial than has been explored until this point, including the use of polyrhythms. In fact he works on a Pandeiro technique that allows one to play two different voices simultaneously.Krakowski started his professional career at 18, playing in clubs in Rio de Janeiro with some of the great names in Brazilian music. He dedicated himself to the instrumental Brazilian music style call Choro, where he found the freedom of expression he was looking for.At 22 Sergio joined the group Tira Poeira and had the opportunity to share the stage with such great names in Brazilian music such as: Maria Bethânia, Lenine, Zélia Duncan, Olivia Hime, Francis Hime, Bnegão and Beth Carvalho. He appeared on TV programs such as: Jô Soares, Altas Horas, e Sem Censura and performed at events such as the TIM Festival and at the Teatro Luis Angel Arango in Bogotá.In the beginning of the year 2005 Sergio offered a Pandeiro workshop in Montevideo, Uruguay. In October and November of the same year he have given workshops in many cities of Europe such as: Milan, London, Brighton, Montpellier, Perpignan, Amsterdan, Stockholm and Barcelona. In this tour, he had the opportunity to play with great names like Chano Domingues.Because of the great success he achieved, in 2006 he made another European tour that included also Berlim and Bologna. At this time, he had the opportunity to play with one of the new names in the Italian scene, Cristina Renzetti.
During three and a half year (since 2004) Sergio played weekly with the group Anjos da Lua, whose repetoire consists of classic sambas. In this period, this musical event became undoubtably a reference in the Rio de Janeiro's night scene, changing the musical taste of many young people. In 2007 Sergio is in Paris, working on his computer music project.Besides being musician, Sergio Krakowski made his graduate studies and his masters in pure mathematics. Actually he does his PhD at IMPA (www.impa.com), an institute known worldwide. His PhD focus on developing real-time computer music systems that react to the Pandeiro sound. The goal is to create new forms of music expression. This hard work is done to achieve goals that are unreachable using the actual technology available on the market. Some results can already be watched on video.
