Ever listen to the radio lately? It’s the same songs over and over; the same tightly controlled playlists and the same mindless tracks on repeat in every market. Why is this? Well, it’s because there are only a few major players in the game and many decisions are based entirely on polls with questionable scientific procedures. Plus, even with the crackdown on “Payola,” if you don’t have the budget to provide perks to the programming director and you don’t play golf with him every Sunday, chances are, your record isn’t going to get any spins. Anybody else ever work for a label? Cmon’ you know what goes on in those last few days before an “add day,” when stations are asked to add an artist’s newest single into rotation? I’d say it’s like a cross between a circus and a strip club and a wall-street trading room.

Here’s an overview of the current situation:

4 major radio broadcasting conglomerates:

- CBS Radio

- Citadel Broadcasting Corp.

- Clear Channel Communications

- Entercom Communications

4 major label affiliates:

- EMI Group

- Sony/BMG

- Universal Music Group

- Warner Music Group

The barriers to entry are high to join the exclusive party and studies have proven the iron clasp the majors have over the nations’ commercial airways. What avenues then, are available for the unsigned acts, for the next generation of superstars and for the independent artists making livings from music by following their own set of rules? College and local radio are the answer. They provide great exposure, help acts to test their songs in different markets and help artists’ to develop large, loyal followings across the country.

College and local radio are great tools for supporting tours and they target and really speak to a target audience better than most of todays out of touch commercial radio behemoths. College radio stations are very open to new music and to up-and-coming artists. They usually have different shows and different DJ’s who are willing and excited to receive material from acts like you. Getting your song played on college and local radio is a great way to build a buzz with fans and within the music industry. You can develop relationships with your core audience to establish a real career at the same time you’re turning heads in the industry and getting those fat cats in the suits to finally take some notice.

The College Radio Network is run on a volunteer basis by a small group of college kids or recent graduates (plus one kid in high school, but he’s really cool). Most of us work with college radio or used to work with our college radio. The network has recently become affiliated with the Music Industry Network, which is a larger network dedicated to promoting good music and helping unsigned and independent artists get access to the resources they need to compete.

College and local radio stations can and will play any type of music, as long as its good music. We can’t stress that enough. Make sure your music is great before you just start sending your single off to every contact listing in the directory. But, if you really have a good sound, no matter what genre you do and what your style is, you will be heard on these radio stations. Thanks.

College radio thanks you for making the music that you make and for supporting true music.
