WANNA KNOW THE STORY BEHIND THE UNUSUAL CIVIL WAR REENACTMENT PICTURE ABOVE???No, it's not the world's smallest Civil War reenactor. That little guy, then 3, now 14 is my oldest son. Way back when, the movie "Gettysburg" opened and became the standard for Civil War movies and we got hooked. I had a few reenactor buddies who got bit parts in the movie as one played a member of southern Lt. General James Longstreet's (played by Tom Berenger) staff. Anyway, my son saw the movie as I had bought my own copy of it and decided that for halloween, he wanted to be a Civil War cavalry officer. So I set to work on a costume for him. The hat and accessories (buttons, hat, insignia, etc) came from the same shops at Gettysburg which supplied the actors costumes. My ex made the pants and jacket for him according to the design I laid out. By the time we were done, it was a scaled down version of the uniform of Colonel Devin of Buford's (Sam Elliot) Calvary Brigade. Needless to say, my son was thrilled and had a great Halloween. He even won a prize for the best costume at our community association's party.A few months later in March, through my various connections, I found out that a new monument to the soldiers of Maryland was scheduled to be dedicated at Gettysburg. Knowing that there were several reenactment groups scheduled to be at the ceremony, my son decided that he wanted to wear his uniform again. So we packed up the family, grandparents and all, and off we went. It was a great time as we got to meet then Governor Schaefer and a real General of the Maryland National Guard as well as witness the dedication ceremony. It was a huge crowd, of spectators, marching reeneactors, politicians, and military bands. Many grown men and women dressed as reenactors noticed my son and aproached him. Several even wanted photos with him and he drew admiring onlookers where ever we went. However, the highlight of the day was when at one point we finally had a few minutes of time alone and my son looked out across a grass field near the monument site. About 60-70 yards away there was a small group of southern reenactors all dressed in gray. One of them was even portraying legendary General Robert E. Lee. My son took notice and reached up to grab my arm saying, "Look daddy, it's General Lee!" I then said, "Let's go see him". That's all my boy needed to hear as he took off at a run towards General Lee. At a few paces off, Lee noticed the boy running up to him. My son then stopped at attention and offered a perfect salute to Lee, followed by Lee returning the salute and reaching out to take his small hand. Then in his best southern drawl while staying totally in character, the gentleman said to my boy, "Suh, are you gonna order a cavalry charge upon my position? If you should order me off this hallowed ground, I shall leave at once". Needless to say this was the highlight of the event for us and the whip cream on top of a perfect day.FROM THE LOG OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS" ...... I estimate that we were making about 9 knots and had gone 67 !/2 miles between the beginning of the night and 2.00 o'clock in the morning. At two hours after midnight, the Pinta fired its canon, my prearranged signal for the sight of land............. When we caught up with the Pinta, which was always running ahead because she was a swift sailer, I learned that the first man to sight land was Rodrigo de Triana, a seaman of Lepe..........."
