London Burlesque and Cabaret events and community

About Me

Velvet London was set up as a community of those involved and interested in cabaret and burlesque.
We run monthly burlesque and cabaret meetups where we give new performers a stage and established performers a chance to try out new acts with an enthusiastic and supportive audience. We always include the "talk to a stranger" networking section to give performers, musicians, photographers, costume makers, promoters and others the chance to meet and talk. This has lead in the past to new business opportunities, creative collaborations, friendship and even romance!
After a most incredible 1st birthday event at Madame Jojos, the meetup is taking a chill pill and heading this month to hip East London for our next event on Thursday 3rd July.
Also check out our new adventure The Rubadub Social Club at the beautiful Pigalle Supper Club. Returning as late Friday night show on the last Friday of the month. www.myspace.com/rubadubsocialclub
For listings of all things burlesque and sophisticated check out www.myspace.com/sophisticates_diary. It's the best.
Since setting up this site we have been thanked kindly, asked how we are and been told we just need to whistle if we need help. We have been told that it sounds fabulous, that we should have a fabulous day and that we should stay fabulous. We have been sent love, lipstick kisses, smooches and have been told we are wondrous. We have been called sweetpea and dollface. We have people trying to sell their beautiful veiled hats, latex couture and nipple tastles. We have one request for pie, but that was my friend Jimmy from Wigan and it's grim up north. We believe in romance and suspect you do too. In defence of romance we need to fight back before it is lost forever. Keeping the dream alive will require some semi-nakedness, but there will be a spinkle of opinions, a dash of social politics and a rather large dollop of humour. So ladies, gentlemen, kind folk, lets bring Burlesque back to Britain. Lets bring it back to class. We may be sexy and funny and clever but goddamn it we're not cheap. Bring it on.
If you have any other queries we'd love to hear from you via myspace or by emailing [email protected]

I'd like to meet:

Anyone interested or working in the world of cabaret, burlesque, music hall, vaudeville, musicians, dancers, magicians, actors, comedians, people with circus skills, acrobats, journalists, photographers, filmakers, artists and DJ's of vintage/jazz/rockabilly sounds.

Music:

I hope you've been appreciating the weird and wonderful music we've been playing - all discovered on myspace. So far we love Berliners Palastorchester and Max Raabe, Noblesse Oblige, Michaelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen from Turkistan (!), the brilliant Richard Cheese from Vegas, Kiki and Herb (New York's finest), The Muppets and from blighty Paloma Faith, Tricity Vogue, Hooverville, Anne Freier, The Irrespressibles, Fester Crabgrasse and Mr Meredith. Oh and not forgetting DJ Healer Selecta, he can do it on the dancefloor like no other mother.
Now playing the strangest take on the Happy Birthday theme we could find.

Heroes:

Lee Evans, Patch Adams, Dita von Teese, Marilyn Monroe, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Jerry Sadowicz, Paul Foot
