Helene Caroline of Thurn and Taxis, nee duchesse in Bavaria and princess of Bavaria
04. 04. 1834 München - 16. 05. 1890 Regensburg
Helene, nicknamed Nene, was destined to marry her cousin, Emperor Franz Joseph I. But the plans quickly went awry when Franz, instead of proposing to Helene, defied his mother's wishes and declared he would marry Helene's sister, Sissi.Helene swallowed her pride and disappointment and spent the next few years busying herself with charitable work. She later married (1858) Prince Maximilian of Thurn und Taxis. The couple was very much in love and had four children: Louisa, Elisabeth, Maximilian and Albert. Sadly, only 9 years after the wedding, Prince Maximilian died suddenly and Nene never recovered from that pain. She retreated in her luxurious mansion of Regensburg and became very melancholic with age. The death of her son Maximilian in 1885 shattered her mental stability. She died in May 1890 after a terrible agony. When Elisabeth ("Old Sissi" as Helene called her) visited her dying sister, they exchanged these words in English: "We two have hard puffs in our lives", "Yes, but we had hearts." 1 answered Helene.(www.sissiweb.net)
