About Me

Other projects with which Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk have recently been involved include.....
THE BROKEN HEARTED BRIDE by STRAWBS DAVE LAMBERT and CHAS CRONK toured the UK and USA with STRAWBS during May and June 2008 - the 40th Anniversary Year of the band's inception.
Directly prior to the tour, Lambert and Cronk got together with fellow Strawbs Dave Cousins, John Hawken and Rod Coombes (the original band line-up from late 1973 onwards no less!) and recorded a new album - "THE BROKEN HEARTED BRIDE" which is due for release on 8th September 2008 in the UK and 7th October 2008 in the USA.
Chris Tsangarides, whose studio is littered with gold discs for albums by Yngwie Malmsteen, Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy and many others, produced "The Broken Heart Bride".New songs include the title track and "The Call to Action", samples of which may be heard here on MySpace, while others (co-written by Chas Cronk and Dave Cousins) include "Through Aphrodite's Eyes", "Too Many Angels" and "Christmas Cheer". Dave Lambert has two solo compositions featured: "You Know As Well As I" and "Shadowland", while Chas Cronk has a solo composition entitled "Everybody Knows".

This double CD was recorded live at The Robin 2 in Bilston on 5th March 2006 and captures the power and the glory of the electric line-up of Strawbs, including both Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk. Special guest John Ford joined them for an acoustic "show within a show". "Lay Down With The Strawbs" features live versions of all the band's hit singles, including "Part of the Union", and many classic album tracks spanning their 40 year career.

On 6th October, 2008, Dave Lambert's psychedelic band Fire, originally formed in the late 1960's and disbanded in 1971, release a brand new live album on Angel Air Records - "THE MAGIC SHOEMAKER LIVE!"
The album was recorded in front of highly appreciative audiences at The Windlesham Theatre, Surrey, UK, over two evenings late in 2007. Fire reformed for the concerts, with original band members Bob Voice (drums, backing vocals) and Dick Dufall (bass, backing vocals) joining Dave Lambert to play Fire's 1970 album "The Magic Shoemaker" in its entirety, together with Fire's best known songs including "Father's Name is Dad" and "Treacle Toffee World". Ray Hammond, Fire's earliest manager, joined in the fun by narrating the story of The Magic Shoemaker, written by Dave Lambert. The album was mixed by Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk, and Chas was also responsible for mastering.
Available now from Angel Air Records and major retailers worldwide.

Dave and Chas have worked together on numerous musical projects dating back to 1971, when Chas played bass on the film score for "X, Y & Z" (aka "Zee & Co." in the USA), which Dave Lambert co-wrote with Rick Wakeman. The following year both were recruited to play on Rick's highly successful first solo album, "THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII", along with Dave Cousins. Shortly afterwards, Dave Lambert and Chas both joined Dave Cousins in Strawbs themselves.
Rick, the two Daves and Chas were reunited in April 2007 when they recorded a special live session at Shepperton Film Studios for “RICK’S PLACE” on PLANET ROCK. The recording took place on the stage where "THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST", an incredibly successful and innovative UK music programme, was recorded from 1971-87. Dave and Chas, together with Dave Cousins, were again reunited with Rick Wakeman on 8th August 2008 when Acoustic Strawbs were delighted to perform at Rick's Celebrity Classic and Golf Gala Dinner at Cobham Hilton. After Acoustic Strawbs had played a short set Rick joined them to play two early Strawbs numbers: "Glimpse of Heaven", followed by "Where is this Dream of Your Youth" which Rick's own band also joined them for. The event was held in aid of Sparks (a charity which raises money for research and development, including help for premature babies). This was Rick's 13th year Rick of hosting the event.
*********************************************Aside from their work with Strawbs, both Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk have numerous alternative musical projects with which they are involved:Dave Lambert recently reunited FIRE, the psychedelic band which he formed in the late 1960's with Bob Voice (drums/vocals), and Dick Dufall (bass/vocals) for two historic concerts. Fire played their groundbreaking "rock musical fairytale" album"THE MAGIC SHOEMAKER" (now a rare collectors' item) in its entirety at The Windlesham Theatre. A live CD entitled "THE MAGIC SHOEMAKER .. LIVE" which was professionally recorded over both nights is due for release on Angel Air Records on 6th October 2008. More details at www.myspace.com/2007fire .

Dave recently discovered that a song he wrote for Fire entitled 'Father’s Name is Dad'(released in 1968) was sampled by The Pet Shop Boys for 'I Didn't Get Where I Am Today', released as the B-sideof their top ten CD entitled 'Flamboyant' in 2004. Dave is credited as co-writer on the song (a rare occurrence as The Pet Shop Boys normally write their own material), which prominently features his unmistakable guitar riffs. According to information given on the Pet Shop Boys' official website (www.petshopboys.co.uk) 'I Didn't Get Where I Am Today' features Johnny Marr (of The Smiths, among others) on guitar.

Chas Cronk, meanwhile, has played both alongside Dave Cousins and Ian Cutler as part of a trio, and also as a member of Dave Cousins and THE BLUE ANGEL ORCHESTRA, which additionally boasts the talents of Miller Anderson (SPENCER DAVIS GROUP) on lead guitar and Chris Hunt (ex-LONNIE DONEGAN BAND) on drums.

Chas also occasionally performs as one half of CRY NO MORE, together with Roy Hill - musical delights interspersed with humour for the broadminded.

The Making of "Touch the Earth".....
On the strength of just two of the songs on "Touch the Earth" - the title track and "The Night", both made in 1981 - EMI were highly interested in signing the musicians involved - DAVE LAMBERT (vocals and guitars), CHAS CRONK (vocals, bass, guitars), Tony Fernandez (drums) and Andy Richards (keyboards), who possess between them an impressive pedigree of musicianship, having worked with many bands of the highest calibre including STRAWBS, RICK WAKEMAN, THE PET SHOP BOYS, STEVE HACKETT'S BAND, FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD, CRY NO MORE, FIRE, KING EARL BOOGIE BAND and many more. Unfortunately, due to a plethora of other musical commitments that signing didn't come to fruition, and the material on this album remained unreleased until April 2007.
Nick Magnus and Ian Mosley, excellent musicians with whom Chas Cronk was working in STEVE HACKETT'S BAND in the early 1980's, and whose musical careers to date include working with MARILLION, GORDON GILTRAP, THE ENID, RENAISSANCE and many other excellent artists, were later recruited to contribute to eight further tracks - Nick adding keyboards, drums and sequencing, and Ian adding percussion.
Dave Lambert's "One and Only" and Chas Cronk's "A Splash of Blue" are both brand new songs however, written and recorded in 2006/7, in the midst of their constant touring and recording commitments with Strawbs and Acoustic Strawbs.
"Touch the Earth" is therefore a unique album for many reasons; it involved the joining together of several talented musicians, possessing between them a wealth of musical experience, to create an excellent collection of songs which ooze popular appeal. Dave Lambert's rich and incredibly versatile vocals lead the way on all tracks except for the album's final offering, which Chas Cronk sings, letting everyone into the (until now) rather well-kept secret of his superb vocal talents.
The album insert features some attractive artwork and credits show that both Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk added some keyboards; Dave added some percussion also, and an informative piece written by him gives welcome insight into the way the album came about.
For those who appreciate the superb and highly significant contributions which Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk have made to Strawbs' songs over the years therefore, this album gives a welcome opportunity to hear how solidly their musicianship stands on its own merits. However, although the album is sure to appeal to such an audience, "Touch the Earth" deserves success far beyond Strawbs' aficionados, for a wide diversity of musical genres are hinted at within its twelve tracks: if you fancy some rock/pop, 60's retro sounds of varying ilks, a bit of blues, a hint of funk and soul, and a touch of the relaxing and ethereal, all involving some amazing electric guitar playing, a rhythm section that rocks, a kaleidoscope of keyboards and a whole lot more…. then "Touch the Earth" is very definitely for you.
