Hi and welcome to John Hawken's Official Myspace site, I'm Chris Newman, relative and close friend of John and maintain this site for him here in the UK.For all updated info on John's Musical activities do check this site out regularly.John as ever is very busy at the moment(August 2007) and is currently on a highly successful whirlwind tour with the electric "Strawbs" line-up in Europe at the moment.John and I are in regular contact so if you have any messages please send them here and I will be sure to pass them on. So again a big hello to you all and over to John himself now for some background on his amazing career to date....... _______________________________________________________Perha ps an introduction to my musical history is in order. Are you sitting comfortably? It's a long story.I was given classical piano lessons from the age of five until around my 18th birthday. What ultimately de-railed me from these studies was the eruption, in the 1950's, of Rock & Roll and my sudden exposure to keyboard players such as Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Johnson, Otis Spann, etc., etc. Suddenly, I had to learn how to play by ear, without sheet music. Big difference! __________________________________________________________In 1960, I was living with my parents in Weybridge, Surrey, in the South of England when I joined my first rock band -- the Cruisers Rock Combo. The personnel consisted of Dave Maine (drums), Pete Harris (bass), Mick Dunford (lead guitar), myself on piano and three singers, Tony Gallagher, Kenny King and Chris Wing. We rehearsed (and occasionally played) at the Addlestone Youth Club (in the town next to mine). _______________________________________________________ At the same time, Ray Phillips and Arthur Sharp were the singers in a band called the Nashville Teens who also rehearsed and played around the Addlestone area. They split with their band at about the same time we split from our singers and the new Nashville Teens were born. A little later, Roger Groome joined us on drums, John Allen on lead guitar and Terry Crowe became our third singer. This was the line-up that turned professional in 1963 and went to Germany (as most English bands did at that time) to play very long hours in the clubs (including Hamburg's Star Club). ________________________________________________________In 1964 (now minus Terry Crowe and with Barry Jenkins on drums) we signed a management contract and recorded "Tobacco Road," at the same time touring with Chuck Berry and Carl Perkins on their very first tour of England. I was delighted to be playing piano for both of them, in addition to playing the Nashvile Teens set. We went to the U.S. in late 1964 to play the "Murray the K" Christmas show at the Fox theater in Brooklyn and subsequently toured extensively in England and Europe. ________________________________________________________Pete r Harris left in 1966 and was then replaced on bass by Neil Korner, formerly of the New Vaudeville Band (of "Winchester Cathedral" fame). Neil and I also worked together from time to time in a very popular London pick-up band, Frankie Reid & The Powerhouse which also featured Dana Gillespie on vocals and occasionally, the sax section from Cliff Bennett's Rebel Rousers -- John Knightsbridge on guitar (later of Illusion), and many others. ______________________________________________________ Although our subsequent records failed to equal the success of "Tobacco Road," the band was a terrific "live" band and work came fairly steady until I left late in 1968. _______________________________________________________ In early 1969 I got a telephone call from Jim McCarty (ex-Yardbirds drummer) asking if I was interested in a new project he and Keith Relf (ex-Yardbirds vocalist) were putting together. I turned up at his house in Thames Ditton along with Louis Cennamo (ex-The Herd, James Taylor) and a steel player named Brian (B.J.) Cole. The five of us jammed for several hours. Brian (a brilliant player) didn't make the cut but I later heard that he went on to become a top session player and his work is found on many projects from the 70s. ________________________________________________________ A little later, Jane Relf joined us on vocals and Renaissance was born. Our live gigs included a tour of the States and work in Europe. We recorded two albums produced by Paul Samwell-Smith (ex-Yardbirds, whose career as a producer included many of Cat Stevens top projects). _________________________________________________________ Circumstances brought about huge changes in the band. The "Mark 2" version of Renaissance (as it's come to be known) consisted of me ..boards, Neil Korner (the Teens' second bass player) bass, Mick Dunford (Cruisers and Teens) guitar, Terry Crowe (from the early Teens) sang alongside Binky, the new female singer -- and pinning it all down was Terry Slade on drums. _________________________________________________________ I was ready for a change when Spooky Tooth contacted me for a three month tour of Europe on the strength of their hit record "I Am the Walrus" from their "Last Puff" album. But before I left Renaissance, I helped my successor -- John Tout -- to integrate with the band. He and Mick went on to record many albums with their new line-up which included vocalist Annie Haslam. _________________________________________________________ In 1971, I joined Third World War (Britain's first punk band?). Their singer/songwriter, Terry Stamp, wrote amazing lyrics (he still does) and bass player Jim Avery supplied the music. We survived long enough to put down one album (the band's 2nd release). The group also included John Knightsbridge (lead guitar) and Craig Collinge (drums). It seemed that every minority faction in London loved the band (the Black Panthers, White Panthers, Gay Lib, etc., etc.) but this never translated into sufficient financial support to keep us going. I've recently started collaborating with Terry and Jim once again -- but that's another story. _______________________________________________________ A brief spell with Vinegar Joe (with Robert Palmer) and then on to the Strawbs in 1973.At my audition for the Strawbs, Dave Cousins introduced me to the Mellotron, an instrument I later learned to love in spite of its quirky reliability. The band consisted of Dave Cousins (singer/songwriter), Dave Lambert (guitar), Chas Cronk (bass), Rod Coombes (drums) and me ..boards. Our tours included the U.S., Japan and Europe. During my tenure (1973-1975) we produced two albums, "Hero and Heroine" as well as "Ghosts." ___________________________________________________________ In 1977, the original Renaissance re-formed with Jim, Keith, Jane, Louis and me. Unable, for legal reasons, to use the name Renaissance, we chose "Illusion" -- which had been the title of our second album as Renaissance. A tad confusing... ___________________________________________________________ Tragically, Keith Relf was electrocuted at home while working on our music. We re-shuffled the band, bringing in John Knightsbridge (lead guitar) and Eddie McNeill (drums), with Jim stepping up to the mike to share vocal duties with Jane and also playing rhythm guitar. We produced two albums "Out of the Mist" and "Illusion" before things wound down in 1979. _______________________________________________________ In November 1979 my family and I moved to the U.S.In 2001, Jim McCarty, Jane, Louis and I also recently released another album, entitled "Through the Fire" -- this time the band's name was "Renaissance Illusion" -- with songs written and produced by Jim. _________________________________________________________ As for the future, who knows? I intend to work with Chris on this site and continue recording musical ideas as and when they occur -- as well as collaborating with any interesting projects that come my way.Again, welcome, and please feel free to contact me through Chris with any questions, suggestions etc.etc.My very best regards,John Hawken

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

John's DISCOGRAPHY:THE NASHVILLE TEENS: The Nashville Teens' "Tobacco Road" album (from 1964) was the first recorded appearance of John Hawken. A huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, "Tobacco Road" appeared during the first wave of the British band rise during 1964. Produced by noted British producer Mickie Most, "Tobacco Road" featured John's driving piano as part of the overall strong performance. The Teens also worked with other noted producers like Andrew Loog Oldham, producer of The Rolling Stones. John was a member of the Teens until 1968. _________________________________________________________REN AISSANCE: Following his departure from The Nashville Teens in 1968, John became a founding member of Renaissance -- a band formed from the ashes of The Yardbirds, the band that had birthed legendary guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Former Yardbirds Keith Relf and Jim McCarty created Renaissance with the help of Keith's sister, Jane Relf (vocals), Louis Cennamo (ex-Steamhammer (Rod Stewart's old band) on bass) and John Hawken ..boards. The original 1969 album was released with two different covers, the gold-looking cover was the UK cover (on Island Records) and the greenish cover was the one seen in the USA (released on Elektra Records). The original Renaissance created just two albums before calling it a day in 1971. There was the 1969 self-titled album (also sometimes referred to as the 'Kings & Queens" album) and 1970's Renaissance "Illusion" album. This album also includes the first appearance of Michael Dunford (who would later lead Renaissance through many more albums), whom John introduced to Renaissance following their years together in the Nashville Teens. __________________________________________________________LU THER GROSVENOR: This was the first solo album recorded by this former guitarist with Spooky Tooth who would go on to greater fame as Ariel Bender -- lending his guitar to artists like David Bowie, Ian Hunter, Mott the Hoople, Widowmaker and many others. _________________________________________________________CLA IRE HAMILL: In 1971, Claire Hamill recorded "One House Left Standing," an album recorded for Island Records and that included an all-star cast of musicians like John Martyn, Terry Reid and David Lindley (Kalidescope, Jackson Browne) on guitars; Paul Buckmaster (Elton John's arranger) ..o; John "Rabbit" Bundrick (Free) and John Hawken ..boards; Simon Kirke (Free, Bad Company) on drums and Tetsu Yamauchi (Free) on bass. Claire's voice is wonderful and this is a great album. _______________________________________________________ THIRD WORLD WAR: In 1972, John Hawken joined Third World War in time to record their second album, Third World War 2 for Track Records, Pete Townsend's record company. Third World War has been referred to as possibly being England's first punk band. A big departure from the kind of material that John normally played, Third World War is arguably the most rocking band John ever played with. _________________________________________________________SUT HERLAND BROTHERS: In 1972, John Hawken also did session work for the Sutherland Brothers "Lifeboat" project. The Sutherland Brothers soon afterward toured the United States as Elton John's opening act on the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" tour. The Sutherland Brothers were a great band and Lifeboat contained one of their major hits "(I Don't Want to Love You But) You Got Me Anyway," as well as one of their songs which would become a major hit for Rod Stewart, when Rod recorded the Sutherland Brothers "Sailing." _________________________________________________________STR AWBS: In 1973, John Hawken joined the Strawbs. Soon afterward, the band began recording the Gold certified "Hero & Heroine," an album that is considered one of the cornerstone projects of the folk-progressive genre.Following H&H, Strawbs recorded the masterpiece, "Ghosts," the last record by the Strawbs to feature John's keyboards as a member. Ghosts is considered by many Strawbs fans to be one of the high points in the long career of this great band which began in 1968 and continues to record today.Following the success of "Hero & Heroine," Strawbs toured heavily throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan. Today, "Strawbs Live in Tokyo '75" hails from this period and is available on DVD. It also includes the bonus of the "Grave New World" movie made for the cinema in the UK, featuring the songs from GNW done on film years before the advent of MTV. There is also a bonus video track of the first TV appearance of Rick Wakeman playing live with the Strawbs. __________________________________________________________IL LUSION: In 1977, the former members of the original Renaissance reformed and unable to use the name Renaissance, they settled on Illusion -- the title of the second Renaissance album from 1971. Illusion's "Out of the Mist" is hailed as one of the most beautiful classical rock albums ever recorded and features what many believe to be some of John's most dramatic and lyrical playing. In 1978, Illusion recorded their second album, the self-titled "Illusion" project which features "Madonna Blue" and other great cuts like "The Revolutionary."Note: Both "Out of the Mist" and "Illusion" are now available on a special remastered "two-fer" CD entitled "Illusion: The Island Years.""Enchanted Caress" is a set of previously unreleased Illusion songs and demo recordings largely made in 1979 and also includes a rare track, "All the Falling Angels," earlier recorded by Keith Relf (along with Louis Cennamo on bass) shortly before his death in 1975. Though not pictured, John is credited on the cover. As demo recordings, the project does not have the polish of the other Illusion recordings but Jane's vocals are prevalent and include some wonderful recordings of her work."Da Capo" is a set of 25 Renaissance songs that were chosen to represent Renaissance from its formation in 1969 until 1995 when the two disc project was released. Included from John's tenure with the band are two songs from each of the first two Renaissance albums, 'Kings & Queens' and 'Island' from the 1969 album. As well as 'Love Goes On' and 'Love Is All' from the 1971 Renaissance "Illusion" album."Supernatural Fairy Tales: The Progressive Rock Era" is a five disc boxed set released by Rhino Records in 1996 that features many of the greatest progressive rock bands in one of the most comprehensive compilations ever set to disc, John is featured in the set as a part of both Renaissance (with "Kings & Queens" from the original 1969 album) and with Strawbs (whose "Round & Round" from Hero & Heroine is also heard here). Out of print and usually very expensive when you find a copy. A great set for those who truly love progressive symphonic rock. __________________________________________________________RE NAISSANCE ILLUSION: "Through the Fire" is a project recorded in 2001 under the band name of Renassance Illusion, headed by Jim McCarty and featuring John Hawken, Jane Relf, Louis Cennamo and other guests. __________________________________________________________ STRAWBS: "Deja Fou" is the 2004 disc created by the classic 1974/75 line-up of the Strawbs which featured all new material, with songs like "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow," "Under a Cloudless Sky," "Russian Front" and "This Barren Land" featuring John's keyboards. Deja Fou also features Adam Wakeman, Rick Wakeman's son, on songs like "NRG." John came up with the album title as a play on words referencing both the well-known deja vu and the lesser known French word, fou, meaning something "insane or crazy." John said that getting back together again after thirty years to do a tour and a new album was indeed a deja fou! But the fans that caught the 2004 tour of the classic 1974/75 Strawbs line-up greeted the band enthusiastically and most venues were sell-outs. The tour's final date found the Strawbs headlining the 2004 NearFest (North East Art Rock Festival) at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania -- before a standing ovation audience of whom nearly half were not even born when the 1974/75 line-up were making their original tours and records. ___________________________________________________________S TRAWBS: "Live at NEARfest 2004" is the 2005-released disc created during the 2004 tour of the classic 1974/75 line-up of the Strawbs. Many fans feel that the Live at NEARfest disc is one of the finest produced by Strawbs and it contains many powerful performances, such as a blistering version of "Autumn" and arguably the most intense version of "New World" on record. Other stand-out cuts include "Burning For Me," "Down By the Sea," and "Round and Round," among others. ___________________________________________________________ STRAWBS - ELECTRIC TOUR UK, MAY-JUNE 2008Wednesday 21 May 2008 - The BoardWalk, Sheffield Thursday 22 May 2008 - Glenfarg Hotel, Glenfarg Friday 23 May 2008 - The Ferry, Glasgow Saturday 24 May 2008 - The Platform, Morecambe Sunday 25 May 2008 - The Inn At Lathones, St Andrews Tuesday 27 May 2008 - The Stables, Wavendon, Milton Keynes Wednesday 28 May 2008 - Yside, Builth Wells Thursday 29 May 2008 - Robin 2 Club, Bilston Friday 30 May 2008 - The Playhouse, Sleaford Saturday 31 May 2008 - Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich Sunday 1 June 2008 - Memorial Hall, Freshwater IOW Wednesday 4 June 2008 - Half Moon, Putney Thursday 5 June 2008 - The Brook, Southampton Saturday 7 June 2008 - The Hailsham Pavilion, HailshamFor further UK and USA STRAWBS ELECTRIC TOUR info and updates please visit: http://www.strawbsweb.co.uk/
