You've Only Got Yourself To Blame

About Me

"Vibrant, threatening and song-writing-wise as good as any of their mentors"
Is This Music? magazine
Stroszek are named after the 1976 Werner Herzog film.
'Zek' is Russian slang for 'prisoner' or 'inmate'.

Stroszek are unconventional and uncompromising to say the least. Opting to use a drum machine instead of a drummer is one example and it has given the band a more versatile and exciting edge. Some songs are tinged with electronic dance-like rhythms, some are epic, soul-destroying anthems and others are intense moments of atmospheric beauty.
Stroszek have created a style of music where the beautifully melodic Fender Jazzmaster guitars flow over the driving and sometimes brutal bass whilst the Bowie-esque vocals oscillate from dark drones to wails of repine to create an excitingly peerless sound.
Unlike most bands these days, ‘The Zek’ put equal emphasis on the importance of both the music and the words and they are not scared to speak the truth. The words sometimes even seem to contradict the music, which leads to exciting and interesting results. Tackling themes such as corruption, genocide, nationalism, imperialism and longing among others, there is no chance that people will be suffocated by the over-used ‘Girl Meets Boy’ themes associated with most contemporary bands. Indeed, it is more likely to take on the subjects of ‘MP meets boy’. The subjects are serious but often filled with irony and sometimes delivered in a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ style.
The path towards electronic music continues but the band are now versatile and accomplished enough to write catchy, anthemic choruses in songs such as ‘The Saltire’ or ‘Dancing On The Motorway’, epic and intense songs such as ‘Dialysis’ or ‘Hear The Screams’ and dark but uplifting electronic pieces such as ‘Let The Chaos Begin’ or ‘Burning Libraries’. With time it becomes harder to pin the band down to a specific genre.
Versions of the songs on this page can be found on the self-produced EP which contains the tracks:
You've Only Got Yourself To Blame
The Saltire
Railway of Bones
Dialysis
You can contact the band via this page for a copy, or purchase via the 'Sell Ourselves Just To Survive' section of the main website at www.stroszek.co.uk. Tell us what you think of the songs but the best way to show the band support is by joining The Zek at the gigs and sampling an ever increasingly diverse mix of songs.

"These are the times that try mens souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph"
Thomas Paine
