Ma'Shallah it was a great success, and well received! Being that this is a comedy, the Majority Arab-American Audience reacted with much laughter. We were highly pleased for it told us we did it right! Ma'Shallah!
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK:
"How did you find the actors? What an interesting horizon of real life people in this play."
"What you, Angeline, and Autumn, along with Rola with her film, approached here- is topics somewhat taboo in the Arab Community. Whether they are Muslim or not. It's Pioneering, sisters."
"The part of the Sheik courting Christina was hilarious!!!"
"The brothers trying to sneak off the stage from the girls was so cute. They were very animated and just made us laugh!"
"This is some great stuff, girls! Where and when will this be shown again? Do you plan to YouTube it?"
"If you make some on film you should do episodes but keep them to yourself. Only show a little bit! You want to get Producers to 'produce' it for you!"
................ Hmm?
Note from Autumn & Angeline- any Takers? We're open, Yalla!
Please, check back with this site to see where it will be shown next, and/or what next projects may come alive with "Scar & the City."
Thank you (JazakAllah Khairan) for all he support and interest to bring this alive.
Promotion statement: RAWI's 2nd national conference to hold a panel of Performances
"Writing While Arab: Politics, Hyphens and Homelands" is the theme for the second national conference of RAWI, Radius of Arab American Writers, to be held May 17-19, 2007 at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. The conference comprises a series of panel discussions, films, readings and other live performances, as well as an awards ceremony. Among the panelists and moderators is Dr. Steven Salaita, RAWI's executive director and author of Anti-Arab Racism in the USA: Where It Comes From and What It Means for Politics Today.
Among the performance panel will be Moderator: Marian Haddad, author of the poetry book Somewhere between Mexico and a River Called Home. The performance panel will be comprised of Nathalie Handal's "Arab American Women in Theatre and Performance," Angeline Hazime & Autumn Hose's "Scarf and the City," Leila Buck's "Giving Voice: The Role of Personal Narrative in de-Orientalizing the Arab World," and Dalia Bassiouny's "It's My Story: Arab American Women Autobiographical Performances." The Performance panel is schedualed to begin May 18th at 4 p.m; followed by dinner, and the independent film written, produced and directed by Rola Nashef, "Detroit Unleaded." (Day passes are available.)
One of the performance pieces is a comedy. The one-act play written by Angeline Hazime and Autumn Hose, and to be directed by Angeline Hazime (Angel Productions.) Title is "Scarf & the City," (yes, a parody on the title of that famous HBO show), and is 15 minutes in length (the condensed version of the full length play.) It is a short comedy skit dealing with the topic of the single American Muslim girl in the Detroit Metro region, and the daily situations and hurdles she encounters, and all the funny absurdity involved.
"The idea of this play came to me in dealing with my own personal stories, and also from listening to some of my close friends’ personal stories." said Hazime. "Last summer we would often meet on a certain night, sitting around on pillows drinking our turkish coffee. We would laugh and joke about our past and present courtships or possible courtships."
"One night we were sitting there and I cracked a joke to Angeline 'Hey, we are like that HBO show with the four women in New York," said Hose, "and a second later we switched it and laughed- 'Yeah, but we're Scarf and the City instead!' Let's just say it started from there."
In this One-Act we witness as the four main characters encounter several interesting situations where they deal with such issues from bizarre marriage proposals, a conversation on something taboo, how Muslim brothers behave in certain situations, and so on. It’s a window into the truth of the intimate relationships a Muslim sister (Converted or Born Muslim) experiences right here in the Metro Detroit region. Each story is based off a true encounter and/or story.
Overall, the three day event is packed full of famous Arab writers from all over the United States. It is an event not to be missed if you're an avid writer, performer, and/or scholar.

On marriage and Love in the Muslim Community...
Come on everyone! We can laugh and enjoy be real at the same time. *wink

I'd like to meet:

There is a difference between Love and Lust. Lust is the one to be avoided for that is where the evil eye will sneak in. But Love- that is where trust, honesty, friendship, respect, and so many things "good" can come alive. Inshallah, may we each come to discover all the many levels of what love is.

And where ever you are sisters and brothers in this world, and whatever type of couple you are, Inshallah your love is blessed.

Here is a great LOVE STORY of two people coming together from different Cultures... and becoming a strong and beautiful Muslim Couple! Allahoo Akbar!!!

Remember, Muslimah can be covered or uncovered... And Hijab is something that isn't just a piece of fabric over your head- its in spirit too. A sister can be covered and not be the best Muslimah (Asteferallah), but many of us know this to be true. Putting a scarf on doesn't automatically make a woman perfect. And just the same with the sister who does not wear one- she could be an amazing Muslim regardless! So don't knock one or the other because, my fellow Muslims, the Hijab is First a woman's issue, and second something between her and God... And if Allah (swt) is the final and ONLY Judge.. then it comes down to this; It's NO ONE business but the Sista herself. JazakAllahu Khairan~
