Gamma Gamma Chi Sorority, Inc. is the first Islamic-based national sorority, alhamdulilah. It was founded on April 3, 2005, by the mother-daughter team of Dr. Althia F. Ali and Imani Canty. Sorors Althia and Imani founded the sorority because they wanted to help improve the image of Muslim women and Islam in general. Soror Imani, a college student, had considered joining one of the established historically Black sororities but never went through the intake process because they were Christian based. She felt that many of the practices went against her faith.
In July of that same year, Dr. Ali accepted the position of President and Executive Director. The sorority was also incorporated this same month. The year 2005 was a busy year for this new sorority -- not only was the sorority founded and incorporated, the Board of Directors held their first meeting on September 18th in Greensboro, NC and the first Gold Presentation was held at the University of Kentucky on Novebember 6, 2005, for nine propspective members.
