About Me

Mama Ria is a skilled musician who plays keyboard and harmonicas in a variety of styles. She studied piano from the age of nine and was trained in the classics and in pop styles. Well versed in theory, she can read many types of musical charts or follow basic guitar chords, comp and play melodic or creative improvisational leads on both the keyboard and harp. As a child she sat creek-side beneath various trees and taught herself to play her dad’s old harmonicas, figuring out melodies to traditional songs and to tunes she heard on tv or sang at school. She learned to improvise on the keys as a teen and has expressed her heart and mind in this way whenever possible.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: I’m here to make new friends, network, learn and enjoy. Also, I’m looking for opportunities to play live or record. I could lay a keyboard, harmonica or back-up vocals track on your next recording or possibly help you out with a live show. Whether it’d be playing just for fun and volunteer projects or doing something more serious, I’d need one or more fairly compassionate partners.
Influences: A few cultural favorites from my ever-receding past: Charles De Lint, Honore de Balzac, Joseph Campbell, Ken Wilbur, David Darling, David Peat, Stephen and Noah Levin, Duke Ellington, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ravi Shankar, Mose Allison, Professor Longhair, Leon Russell, Joanne Castle, Commander Cody, Charlie Musselwhite, Nina Simone, Patsy Cline, Bessie Smith, Billy Holiday, Judy Collins, Jackson Browne, (I especially like "Culver Moon" from "Looking East"), Bob Dylan, Asleep at the Wheel, Earl Scruggs, The Tractors (The Little Man's Getting Smaller Every Day) Woody & Arlo Guthry, Hank Williams - Jr and Sr, Merle Haggard, B.B. King, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, The Beatles – George, Ringo, John & Yoko, Paul & Linda, Kris Kristopherson, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Bruce Springstein, Bob Segar, Stray Cats and numerous locals, known and unknown, young and old, music I’ve hear on my favorite radio station (KGSR) The Mavericks, Death Cab for Cutie, Jimmy Reed Highway, The Subdudes, Eliza Gilkenson and Amy Winehouse being just a few examples.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

wish list for Austin

I think it would be really great if we had some old-growth trees, as old as 800 years, some of them, big, twisty ones that don't look like they came from a nursery, along with creeks running over ston...
