Orris was born out of a genuine desire to create something truly unique and nakedly honest. Orris has fused soundscapes and songs with authenticy through exploration, crafting what would ultimately result in a whole new sound comparable to Coldplay and U2 meet Bright Eyes and Sigur Ros. Building textural soundscapes centered around piano and voice, Orris conjured the sound Music Connection Magazine predicts “will win fans among anyone looking for music with a soul.”Raised in Twin Peaks and Chicago, Orris is the son of an ordained minister. By the age of four, he was singing and playing piano competitively and in his teen years went on to win a vocal scholarship to the Wheaton Conservatory where he studied voice, piano and composition. During his studies, he ventured outside the traditional curriculum and delved into experimental exploration of sound, as well as a long-suppressed attraction to Eastern forms of meditation and spirituality.Orris' spiritual and creative intentions have resulted in music reviewers say “makes you believe you’re experiencing something big,” is “intriguing and wholly unique” and in the end, seeks to give something genuine to its audience.
About the Name...
More than an eponymously named project (ironically, the name given Orris by his conservative religious lineage), Orris is a magickal root and a Moon plant which has a long, mystical history. Orris root is used for digging deep into the Moon-ruled subconscious and uprooting what is hidden. Like any Moon herb, it can also be used in divination and dreamwork. The iris is also called the fleur-de-lis, so this Moon plant has often been associated with dominion and war, which gives it a nice protective aspect. Some consider orris root a Venus herb. It is definitely widely used for love magick, and in Hoodoo is known as Love Drawing Herb (and Queen Elizabeth root). The powder form is blown onto clothes, sheets, and so forth to make sure that the owner returns one's love. Orris is harvested in Italy, Wales and has been a traditional fixative for scent since ancient Greece. Orris is famous not only for love magick but as well for smoothing out the combined scents when infusing oils. Many consider that its essential oil, which is locked in these roots and which develops its scent over time, smells like violets.
