About Me

A note from the popular underground.

Named in tribute to no one in particular, The Astral Janes formed in Autumn 2007. Just two members initially, growing five-strong and completely right-on within two months - Singer/Guitarist Alan Mills, and Singer/Guitarist John Chappel, were joined by Bassist Ian Chappel, Drummer Philip Littledyke, and Sitar player and multi-instrumentalist James Stevenson, work began on writing their first long-playing record straight away. A number of songs, “Hey, Believer”, first written and taped on just guitar and tambourine, “For Brian Jones”, an experimental instrumental, “Tell Her You Love Her”, and “It-Girl” followed the band’s transition to The Ark - second home to the band and self-built studio.

The first LP from The Janes is expected Summer-2008, a technicolour-stereo homage to the psychedelic era but not a simple pastiche of the time. Taking other influences - post 70's gloom, late-80's melancholic pop, experimentally blending these sounds and returning with something else entirely. Expect an album spanning broad territory, with no formula in mind other than to keep everything sounding unsafe for the listener, being you.

What next? Shows that could be more like 60’s “Happenings”, than your average local ticket, the promise of an LP from your new best friends, a band of the psychedelic-type The Astral Janes may well have been branded so far, but it’s just the beginning, you know?

Sounds Like: "The Astral Janes have taken all that’s great from the 60’s psychedelic era and stamped their mark all over it creating a 21st century sound."

"Music falls effortlessly from the lips and fingers of The Astral Janes, creating such an accomplished sound, these boys were born for music and we are all borne for the sound of The Astral Janes."

Broccoli Music

"And their sound? The 'England's Newest Hitmakers' Stones of 1966 meet the White Light/White Heat Velvets, or Arthur Lee accepting an invitation to join the Barrett-era Floyd. I know how they sound, I just don't know where they could be getting it from in 2008. The times are clearly a-changin' again."

Shindig Fanzine

"I'm sure the 2nd British Invasion will begin right here, with these new faces of beatdom."
