About Me

The Break-Ups are a band based in Lansing, MI that sings about love, peace, breaking up and probably other subjects relating to those three listed. The band has fooled around with the whole spectrum of rock music, tying the past to the present in their many stylistic forays, making a Break-Ups show seem like a greatest hits performance of songs you’ve never heard by The Beatles, Nirvana, and any number of great powerpop groups of the last several decades. Tying the songs together through blissed out heaviness, acoustic psychedelia and everything in between are the prominent male-female vocal harmonies of the co-ed group, and the songwriting personality of Break-Ups leader Timmy Rodriguez.
The Break Ups officially formed in fall 2005. Timmy Rodriguez and Tommy McCord, the erstwhile guitarists of the group, founded the band as an acoustic studio project, but the rock and roll in their blood demanded live performances. Timmy and Tommy joined with their favorite drummer Hattie Danby to form the full band after recording the acoustic "The George McFly EP" which was released in May 2006. Spring and Summer 2006 saw the band peform as a quartet with Tiana Miller on bass, with all of four contributing vocals, transforming the group into a powerpop band with alternating acoustic passages and guitar freak-outs. This was the time in which the "Timmy singing lead with Tommy and Hattie backing" formula was firmly put in place. Starting in August 2006 Frankie Knoch assumed bass duties from the departed Ms. Miller, and Stefan Johnson joined as a keyboardist. This five piece configuration of The Break-Ups recorded the "Rosa Gallica" EP (released Dec 2006) and the full-length album "Blush Noisette" (released May 2007). Mr. Johnson left the band in July 2007 and the band has remained a quartet, with an array of guests popping in from time to time. The Break-Ups return to the studio in spring 2008, so stay tuned.
We released our first full length album Blush Noisette in May 2007. If you are interested in a copy, just leave us a message or visit Good Time Gang Recordings .
