"...ethnic tradition is an inexhaustible source of inspiration. you can reach out far, you can reach out near, and the effect will always be amazing..."
PIOTR PUCYLO was born in 1971 in Gdynia, Poland. From early years he has been interested in art and cultures of the world. He grew up in the time, when due to the socialism rule it was extremely difficult to learn about other cultures through travelling or access to reliable sources of information. Similarly the native culture, perceived by Polish authorities as undesirable, was a distorted image in the form of beautiful, always smiling villagers. The situation changed in the 90s when Poland opened to the world enabling its citizens to meet representatives of other nations, traditions, cultures and religions.
Since that moment Piotr has been able to broaden the scope of his activities: he worked as a tour guide in Morocco getting an insight into the culture of Maghreb, he hosted radio shows devoted to world music, he wrote to press about folk musical instruments. During all this time he has also been using his fascinations in artistic creation. In the meantime he graduated from Culture Studies at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. During his studies he focused on different aspects of the marriage between tradition and modernity both in music and fine arts.
He found digital art to be the best form for transferring the past into the present.
The majority of his works are a kind of collage using digitally processed monochromatic photographs, vector graphics and different kinds of drawings. At times the ultimate effect is transferred onto linen or wood with the use of acrylic paints. Folk patterns and world music are the main themes appearing in his works. The author’s fascination with the Orient can easily be noticed. The works are characterised by the simplicity of colours as well as the texture which makes them look old and ‘worn out’. The effect is achieved through unique techniques, invented by Pucylo. Reflecting on folk tradition the author considers himself to be a renderer rather than an artist.
As he puts it:
„An artist creates from scratch, I produce my own contemporary vision of the world incorporating and combining elements of folk art and culture, which were not created by me. I simply look at them in a different, but at the same time my own way”.
In 2005 Piotr Pucylo participated in GLOBALTICA Art Exhibition, where his works were shown alongside such artists as: Reza Abedini (Iran), Owusu Ankomah (Ghana), Majid Abbasi (Iran), Esther Mahlangu (South Africa), Tarek Atrissi (Lebanon), Hussein Saidi (Tanzania), Synthia Saint James (USA).
In 2006 he has two individual exhibitions in Bulgaria: Sofia and Varna.
In 2007 he was exhibiting his artworks at Festiv'Art in Amiens, France.
In preparation there are 2 exhibitions of TRANSKULTURA artworks series this year.
Professionally Piotr Pucylo specialises in designing CD covers and posters. His works have been published in Poland, Germany, USA and UK. He has co-operated with artists, festivals, labels and other companies such as Oojami, Bollywood Brass Band, Transglobal Underground, Clotaire K, Laye Sow, The Ukrainians, Forde Folk Music Festival (Norway), Musicport World Music Festival (UK), Balkan Fever London (UK), United One Records, Orange World Records, Zirka Records, Koka Records, Hubble Bubble, Kazum!, Enchanted Tunes etc.
He runs GLOBAL VISA agency. He takes inspiration from ethnic culture and uses his 15 years of experience on music market to design record covers, posters, flyers, catalogues, websites for labels and artists releasing mainly world music, ethnic, folk.
He has stayed faithful to the heart of music, dedicated to art but at the same time committed to his clients and their targets.
But Piotr Pucylo is not only designer / graphic artist, he is also a producer & musician who play on such instruments as: fujara, overtone flutes, frame drums, zarb, darbuka etc. He collaborated with artists as: Yair Dalal, Laye Sow, Ben-Canar, Warsaw Village Band, Kwartet Jorgi, Berklejdy, Ojdana, Himeros, Bally Ramaronandrasana.
