About Me
Born in India, Arup Kanti Das was brought up in a family with rich musical traditions.
He started studying Tabla under the guidance of Dhirendra Prasad Hazari at the age of 9.
Arup's early talent inspired his teacher to entrust him to Pandit Shyamal Bose of Calcutta, one of the most famous tabla players in India. His style is known as Farukhabad gharana (school).
Arup graduated from the university of Calcutta and has a diploma which awards him the title "master of music" from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad of Calcutta.
Thirty years have passed and Arup continues studying the possibilities of the magical instrument, in these years he has played with many famous Indian musicians.
In order to promote Indian Classical music he has travelled all over Europe, performing in many countries( Italy, France, Yugoslavia, Great Britain, Belgium, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Holland) and held various conferences and seminars demonstrating the beauty of this instrument.
Jazz, ethno jazz, ethnic, techno programming, world music, new age, fusion, pop and Italian folk music are just some of the areas which have seen Arup as their promoter, he has widened his musical field experimenting and performing in all the styles stated before, playing also with famous western musicians and from time to time introducing new instruments like kangira, bendir, darabukka, dholak, bongos, udu drum, pakhawaj etc.
During the year 1996 he played for Antonella Ruggiero and then went on to perform as a supporter for Sting's "Mercury Falling Tour96" in Italy.
He continued to collaborate until 2000 with Antonella Ruggiero and Riccardo Fioravanti for an Etno-Jazz project known as "Elementi". He played very recently for the "Progetto per la bellezza" tour with Ornella Vanoni and the Delta V.
Since 2002 he's collaborating with the italian writer and musician Andrea De Carlo .
Arup teaches Tabla and percussions in various Cultural centres in many Italian cities.
