It’s been 40 years since the Monterey International Pop Festival launched the world into the summer of love, and this anniversary seems to be the one that is proving to be commemorative. In June of 1967, the spirit of “Music, Love and Flowers” brought over 200,000 people to Monterey, California to participate in the world’s first rock festival. In a historically unprecedented manner, legendary performers from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis, New York and England, came together without payment to raise money in the spirit of peace and giving back. In an era of social consciousness, the first rock music charitable foundation was established; The Monterey International Pop Festival Foundation, which, in turn, lead to Live AID, Band AID, Farm AID, etc. Over those three days; June 16, 17 & 18, in Monterey California, amazing performances helped to launched the careers of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin and more.

Perhaps it is because this year has some of the same makings of that transformative time 40 years ago: a controversial war happening overseas, the emergence of a new music source, and the birth of a new music press. Forty years ago it was the Vietnam War, FM radio, and Rolling Stone magazine. Today it is the Iraq War, the Internet, and the blogosphere that are being celebrated by a new generation that is seeing the emergence of a period that is every bit as world changing as it was in the 60s.

“The vibe was beautiful. The music was fantastic. To me, that was the purest, most beautiful moment of the whole ‘60s trip. It seemed like everything had come to that moment. And if that could have continued, it really would have been Camelot.”
-Dennis Hopper
“Have you ever been to a Love-In? God, I think it’s gonna be like Easter and Christmas and your birthday, you know - having a whole bunch of different bands. I’ve heard a lot of them, but at the same time – it’s just gonna be too much! The vibrations are just going to be flowing everywhere!”
