Songwriters Welcome!!

About Me

FIRST OFF: I URGE YOU TO GO TO THE NEW OFFICIAL BLUEBIRD CAFE SITE...MYSPACE.COM/THEBLUEBIRDCAFENASHVILLE and make friends!! The Location 4104 Hillsboro Road Nashville, TN Call us at 615-383-1461 We are not able to take reservations through e-mail. Please call. Directions to the Bluebird:.......We're located on Hillsboro Pike, 1 1/2 miles west off of I-440 Exit 3. I-440 is the city's southwestern inner loop, connecting I-24 to the East with I-40 to the West. Exit 3 is marked Hillsboro Pike/ 21st Ave South. Take the Hillsboro Pike side of the exit. After you are on Hillsboro Pike (and don't worry you can't make a mistake here) you will go out 1.5 miles. We are on the left side of Hillsboro at 4104. We are just after the Shell station, and just before McDonald's. The Bluebird isn't a big place, we have red neon lights in our front window, and lots of parking next door in the Bradford Furniture lot.Opened in 1982 as a casual gourmet restaurant with some live music, the Bluebird Cafe has become a music club first and a restaurant second. In 1985 Sunday writer's nights were added as a chance for new writers to audition and perform before a special guest writer. This became an immediate success. In 1987 dinner shows were added. The concept was to have the audience come earlier than 9:30, eat dinner and watch some lesser known musicians play. Although it took a while for the idea to catch on, these shows have also become very popular. The Bluebird has been featured in many newspapers, on TV, and is also the setting for the movie "The Thing Called Love," starring River Phoenix, K.T. Oslin, Samantha Mathis & Sandra Bullock. Kathy Mattea was the first star to be identified with The Bluebird, she is still a friend and a regular guest today. Garth Brooks played on our Open Mic and Sunday Songwriters Shows before he was discovered. You may be able to see some of our shows on the web, or our television show Live From the Bluebird Cafe, on Turner South. We take shows to other venues around the world including festivals in the Southeast and Robert Redford's Sundance Resort.

My Interests

Band Members: Frequently Asked Questions-I am a singer and I don't write my own songs. How can I play the Bluebird? Unfortunately, Nashville and The Bluebird Cafe offer very few showcases for singers. You may perform on Open Mic with songs by local writers, as long as the songs have not been released by a major label or aired on the radio. You should see this as an opportunity to help a writer present his or her songs, this is not a show for the singer as much as it is for the songwriter. What if I don't play an instrument? We do not allow backing tracks at any shows. Some choose to sing A Capella, but it is probably to your advantage to find a guitar player to back you on stage. That is one of the benefits of Open Mics and Songwriters Nights; you will meet many people there who would be happy to help out on a show. The songwriting community is very supportive in this way.Does the Bluebird provide instruments for the shows? No, sorry. You will need to bring your own guitar or keyboard. We do provide a good sound system and someone to operate it for you.How are the late shows booked? Late show time slots are reserved for local or national acts with a large following. Openers for these shows are sometimes selected from the best early show performers, though these opportunities are extremely limited. What is a showcase, and how do I get one? A showcase is an early evening or daytime show to which the performer invites members of the industry in the hopes of getting a recording deal. Many venues charge a substantial fee/rent for this. It is the Bluebird's policy not to rent our room for showcases unless the request comes directly from a major label representative, established manager, or publishing company. What other resources do you recommend for songwriters? The Nashville Songwriters Association International is a great organization which offers many services to writers including seminars and classes office and writing rooms song screenings solid information and advice. Call them at (615)256-3354 for more information. The Songwriters Guild is another good organization. The bookstores are full of good material on songwriting; keep working and educating yourself all the time. Every songwriter should have a subscription to Performing Songwriter Magazine, the very best magazine about writers, independent artists, gear and more.As a listening room, quiet is requested at all times during a performance - which is why our slogan has become "Shhh!" You are welcome to drink and eat with us at any time, but if you are looking for an evening of conversation there are more appropriate places in Nashville. Between the sets you will undoubtedly have plenty to talk about!New writers who have passed our audition process can be heard every Sunday night - it's a great opportunity to hear from tomorrow's hitmakers. The first Sunday of the month, we present our Sunday Writers Picks Night - top Sunday writers and many of our weekday writers will be on hand to present their latest songs.
Influences: The Club Given the stature of The Bluebird Cafe in the musical community, it is surprisingly small. We have only 21 tables available for reservations, but there is always space at the bar and the benches on a first-come-first-served basis. Plan on getting here early for "big" shows. We take reservations beginning at 12:00 noon Central Time until 5:00 pm on Mondays and from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday. To make a weekday reservation, you can call one week in advance (Tuesday for next Tuesday's show, Wednesday for next Wednesday). For Friday and Saturday reservations, call Monday of the week of the shows, starting at noon. Please have your credit card ready, we will need it to hold your reservation, though we won't charge anything to your card unless you cancel without letting us know. Our number for reservations is: (615) 383-1461. Reservations are not accepted by e-mail. Our phones are very often busy, as we only have one phone line for reservations. Please keep trying, the phones are not out of order. Use your redial button, there is no hold for operator button on our system. We apologize for this inconvenience. We have a frequent customer club, which will speed up the reservation process by allowing us to keep your information on file. Frequent customers are allowed to make early reservations after making reservations 8 times. Pick up a Frequest Customer application from the host stand, or call us and we'll mail it out to you.No reservations are accepted for Sunday and most Monday shows. Each seat at a table or the bar has a $7.00 per person food and / or drink minimum. Early shows have no cover - a great value for great entertainment. All main shows have a cover charge which goes directly to the performers. We feature a varied menu of appetizers, hot & cold sandwiches, salads & daily hot specials, available until 10 pm. We open 5:30 pm Monday through Saturdays, 6 pm on Sundays. In deference to the performers and your fellow customers, we have become a non-smoking club except on Mondays after 9 pm for Blues night, and at artist request. Please call to confirm that it is a non-smoking night to be sure. We do have an outdoor speaker and a window to watch through for all our smoking friends. And, we can't say it enough . . . Shhh!
Sounds Like: How to Play the BluebirdOpen Mic- For writers who haven't played at the Bluebird and writers from out of town, Open Mic is the place to start. It gives songwriters a chance to play 2 of their own original songs, solo, or accompanied by no more than 2 others on stage. Drums and backing tracks are not allowed. Open Mic is a great place to try out new material, meet other writers, become a part of the songwriting community, and practice your performing skills. We recommend that all new writers play Open Mic here at the Bluebird as well as at the many other writers clubs in Nashville, on a regular basis.Often we have more writers come to Open Mic than we have time and space for. In this case, we offer writers a "play next time" ticket, so that if the writer doesn't get to play the first time he or she tries, the writer will definitely get to play the next time he/she tries. Sign up Monday nights at 5:30. You must be signed up by 5:45. The line up is announced at 6:00, show runs 6:00-9:00.Sunday Writers Nights- These shows are scheduled by audition, and through this screening process, writers know that they have been selected to play along with other writers who show growing talent and maturity in their songwriting and performance skills. These shows feature 9-12 songwriters playing 3 songs each. The show is hosted, and each show ends with a special guest performance by a hit-writing songwriter from the Nashville Music Industry. Sunday nights are always well attended, which gives the writer a chance to perform for a full room. This is a good chance to develop a following and collect names for a mailing list. The writers performances are rated and filed for use by the Bluebird to determine when a writer might be eligible to perform during the week on our early shows and spotlight shows. All performances must be acoustic, no drums, backing tracks and no more than 3 people on stage. There is no pay for these shows but CD sales are permitted.Auditions are held quarterly, and are ONLY open to Nashville residents, people residing within a 100 mile radius of Nashville and active members of an NSAI regional chapter. They are judged by Bluebird staff and professionals from the Music Industry. The next audition will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 11:00 am. You MUST pre-register for this audition by calling the Bluebird on Friday, January 12, beginning at 11:00 am. At that time you will be given complete instructions on the audition process. Touring artists with professional product and press from out of town newspapers may send a promo package for consideration to: The Bluebird Cafe Writers Night, 4104 Hillsboro Rd. Nashville, TN 37215 Please be warned that we are EXTRA critical of mail in submissions. Early Shows- Tuesday through Saturday, The Bluebird Cafe features the best up and coming songwriters from our Sunday writers nights in no cover charge shows at 6:30 pm. Some of these shows are in an "In The Round" format where four writers sit in a circle in the center of the room and take turns playing their songs. Other shows are set up on stage and feature three different acts each doing a 30 minute set. These shows are always acoustic; bands, drums and large groups are not part of our early show. Writers who have played Sundays at least 4 times and have high scores from our judges may be eligible to play on Early Shows. If you don't already have a following (a number of people who will come out especially to hear you perform), you should continue to play Sunday nights and Open Mic.Other writers who are eligible are 1) staff writers from established Nashville publishing companies and 2) touring artists with product and good press from out of town newspapers. We only book touring songwriters who we believe are as good or better than the best local early show writers. If your package does not include professional product and press, it will not be considered. There is no pay for these shows but CD sales are allowed. To submit material for Early Shows, send to: The Bluebird Cafe, Early Shows, 4104 Hillsboro Rd., Nashville, TN 37215.Sunday Spotlights- The Bluebird Cafe does not offer many opportunities for bands to play. The exception is our Sunday Spotlight, a no cover show each Sunday from 6:30 - 7:15. The same criterion applies as for our early shows-- Writers who have played Sundays at least 4 times, and have high scores from our judges are eligible to play on Sunday Spotlights. Others writers who would be eligible are staff writers from established Nashville publishing companies and touring artists with product and good press from out of town newspapers-- but this time period is for bands up to 6 pieces including drums. The solo writer must have played an early show to be eligible to bring his/her band to play a Sunday Spotlight. There is no pay for these shows but CD sales are allowed. To submit material for Sunday Spotlights, send to: The Bluebird Cafe, Sunday Spotlight, 4104 Hillsboro Rd., Nashville, TN 37215.
