Feeling. Melody. Rhythm. Words that entangle themselves around human emotion and settle in the recesses of your soul. Maybe it’s a love lost, or just the end of a long day and you’ve found a moment of calm. Maybe it’s just distraction, but the melody seeps into your mind and the words just sear themselves into your thoughts…. That’s the kind of music you’ve stumbled on here….
“I want to convey an experience that means something,†Vanessa Brow says. “I write from the soul and I want the listener to see the color of the experience in the melody and feel the deepness of human emotion in the words. If I’ve stirred that in someone, I’ve done what I’ve hoped.â€
Vanessa’s music has been described as “sweet,†“emotional,†“soulful,†and “intelligent.†It’s a blend of folk and blues, with country and pop seeping into the landscape and it meets the listener where they’re at. It’s stuff that will stick with you.
“Beyond whether a song blows someone away with great technicality or a complex melody, I want to reach someone where they’re at. The music and the words hold equal value to me. Somewhere in the melding of the two, I hope the listener finds some common ground.â€
Vanessa began writing lyrics at age twelve and picked up the guitar some years later. It was always a love for her, but it wasn’t until two years ago that she made a commitment to get the music out there. “It’s always been a great love of mine. College and graduate school were distractions from music for me, but deep down I never knew if I was good enough… But something just kept pulling back to songwriting and I can’t imagine not pursuing it now.â€
Although she’s still new to the block, Vanessa is jumping in head first. This year she signed a management and promo deal with Tammy Lam and Brighter Day Productions, and has played numerous venues, including Exodus, Sacred Grounds, Les Beans, Southern Nights, and Borders. She participated in the “Women Who Rock Battle of the Bands“, has played shows with Melissa Crispo, Julie Schuur, Michelle Lucey, and JD Danner, was featured on the Battle of the Bands compilation CD, and has been played on WSLR 96.5 FM in Tampa and on “Indie Rock with TammySlam†on InYourFaceRadio.net.
The future looks bright for Vanessa, and she shows no signs of slowing down.
“I’m excited to see where things go,†she says. “It’s been a lot of fun.â€
