It’s not hard for most of us to imagine being a small town kid with big time dreams, and Miles Richard is no exception. Growing up in the small town of Tarpon Springs in sunny Florida, Miles had his fair share. Known for his determination to succeed and his refusal to give up, even in the face of impossible odds, those dreams were far from being simple thoughts; his aspirations have helped forge and define the lives of every person who’s been touched by his music.Growing up, Miles found inspiration in seemingly medial things; the sound of wind grazing a palm tree, or the way a boat would bob through water, seeming to have a living agenda. He quickly became fascinated with words and expression, and soon after decided, “Expression without music was like a book with no pages.†Twelve years later, his music clearly reflects these feelings and emanates his need to emote. Whether he’s skateboarding downtown or stuck inside on a rainy day, Miles has always stopped to take stock in the intricacies of it all.When asked where his sobriquet, ‘Man in the Whale’ originated, he promptly replied, "After thinking about the idea of being trapped like that, I found it thought provoking. I soon thought about how in some ways we're all a little trapped. Some people feel trapped in a small town...others a dead end job. Maybe it’s an abusive relationship for someone else. We’re all trapped in this bubble and we are all subjected to what happens to us in our lives and in our minds.†He then went on to remark, “I’m no exception; I’m the man in the whale. I only hope that my music can be as profound, real, and honest as this.â€In short, Man in the Whale isn’t really music, it’s a mindset. Through trials and tribulations, we’ve all been trapped, even if we’ve trapped ourselves. Miles Richard seeks to free himself and others with his mind, and he’s done so admirably. His much anticipated, inspirational effort, “Blue Whale EP,†is a testament to his indescribable knack for observing the bars from both sides, and it will be truly interesting to see what his next release will evoke.
