About Me

In January 2005, the Campus Coalition Against Trafficking, a project of FAIR Fund and Polaris Project, was launched as a grassroots outreach initiative for the purpose of engaging college campus and other student youth in anti-trafficking efforts in their communities and abroad. We are a chapter of CCAT - the Central Michigan University Chapter!!--------------------------------------------------- -------------- Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, and is now regarded as the third largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world, following drugs and arms dealing.--------------------------------------------------- 800,000 to 1 million people are trafficked across international borders each year. Hundreds of thousands more are trafficked inside their own borders, making this estimate only a fraction of the actual number of victims. There are current estimates of 14,500 to 17,500 persons trafficked into the United States annually.--------------------------------------------------- -------------- Victims of trafficking typically come from impoverished backgrounds and have a history of violence in their homes. Men, women, and children have all been victimized by this horrible human rights violation. Human trafficking affects young people most adversely in countries and communities where they do not have viable economic opportunities or support from their family to stay safe and healthy. While some victims of trafficking are kidnapped or sold by their family members, many are lured by false job advertisements or "boyfriends" who promise to love them but instead sell them to traffickers or force them into prostitution. Some are smuggled to wealthier nations, such as the United States, where traffickers force them to work fof their "debt" from being brought to this new country.---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------- US State Department, Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons: HT Statistics:-70% of all victims of trafficking are trafficked for sexual purposes. -80% of all victims are female -50% of all victims are youth and children -9.5 billion dollars have been made off the bodies of women and children in sex trafficking. -200,000 to 350,000 American girls and boys are at risk of being exploited for sexual purposes. -In the US any sexually exploited child is a victim of human trafficking. -THERE IS ONLY ONE SHELTER FOR VICTIMS OF TRAFFICKING IN THE US. --------------------------------------------------- Young people should and must be involved in this fight against modern-day slavery.
