Milwaukee Public Museum

Rocking your world like a geologist, since 1882

About Me

I've been enlightening the general public since 1882. I got my start in the building that is now the Downtown Public Library, but moved across the street in the fall of 1962. Carl Akeley, the "father" of modern taxidermy started his career in Milwaukee, and although others had included props and backgrounds in cases holding taxidermy specimens, Akeley's muskrat colony, completed in 1890, is considered the museum world's first total habitat diorama. You can still check out the muskrat colony on the 1st floor. I've gone through more directors and presidents than should be allowed. My favorites include Moynihan and Stephen Borhegyi. Borheygi made me what I am today, and we're so close that despite losing his head in an accident, we still chill together on the 3rd floor. My most popular exhibits are the Third Planet Dinosaur Exhibit....note that the 3rd planet is EARTH, the live butterfly exhibit, the European Village, the Streets of Old Milwaukee, and our Egyptian, African, and Native American exhibits. I've had some rough years lately, but it can only get better! Come and visit mehttp://www.mpm.edu

I'd like to meet:

I'm a people pleaser! I love people from all over the world....just don't complain about how your European country isn't in the European Village (we couldn't freaking fit them ALL in there) And if you are offended by your country being perpetually represented as it appeared in 1965....again, not my fault. I love people who love to learn, I have so much knowledge to impart, just give me a chance, it could be fun! If you are at the museum while skipping school, or to steal money out of my fountains, you need not enquire within. Come to learn and have a good time! And please be nice to my staff, I listen to those idiots bitch enough. You might think I sound cranky, but come on I'm over a hundred years old! Things just don't work as well as they used to, I creak, and I'm freakishly prone to water damage.

Music:

The Rolling Stones...I haven't gotten that damn "na na na Ruby Tuesday" song out of my head since we had it in our IMAX. Those Frank Sinatra CD's they always play at our rental events. The sticker machine theme song, and Walk Like an Egyptian, by the Bangles. Dinosaur Jr.

Movies:

Journey to the Center of the Earth, Indian Jones, Jurassic Park, King Kong, Cleopatra

Television:

PBS, Nature, NOVA, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel. I can do the Dinosaur dance by heart from watching the TV in the 3rd planet entrance.

Books:

The Origin of the Species, Bird Tracks and Sign: A Guide to North American Species, Abyss: The Deep Sea and the Creatures That Live in It

Heroes:

Stephen Borhegyi:
Our finest museum president....getting his dive on.
Carl Akeley:
Here's the father of modern taxidermy after killing a leopard with his bare hands. And you thought all taxidermists were creepy men who lived in their parent's basements. Note: The MPM does not encourage the killing of anything with ones bare hands, and thinks that Akeley got what he deserved in this picture.
Carolus Linnaeus:
The father of modern Taxonomy. He came up with the naming system for living things we still use today. Learn more on the 1st floor at the Tree of Life.
Gregor Mendel:
The father of modern Genetics. He was a monk who bread pea plants and could predict the ratio the offspring would inherit based on the recessive and dominant traits. Remember those pea plants you bred in 8th grade? That's all thanks to this guy.
Lewis and Clark:
If you don't know who they are, you need to go back to the 5th grade. And no, it has nothing to do with Superman.
Samson, the Gorilla:
The Milwaukee Public Zoo's finest. Come check his new exhibit out on the second floor!
Charles Darwin: Everyone's favorite naturalist. Thanks to him we have the theory of evolution. Check out his myspace for more info.
