About Me

"I feel very much a part of my times, of my culture, as much a part of it as rocket ships and television." - Andy Warhol
"I'm in my element when I am a little bit out of this world: then I'm in the real world-I'm on the beam. Because when I'm falling, I'm doing all right; when I'm slipping, I say, hey, this is interesting? It's when I'm standing upright that bothers me: I'm not doing so good, I'm stiff. As a matter of fact, I'm really slipping, most of the time, into that glimpse. I'm like a slipping glimpser." - Willem de Kooning
"I guess that goes with it. If you want to be the top banana, you've got to have these qualities in you. Like Picasso. Picasso was a great painter. At the same time, he was the greatest operator. Between Tom Hess and Harold Rosenberg and Elaine who promoted him...I tell you, Bill was so involved. Unquestionably he had this dynamic of making sure of how it goes and how it works and what the system is here. Don't forget, this is a Dutch boy who came here on a boat. He's going to make it. He had more drive to make it than someone born here who was more relaxed. He knew that this was a tough place to break through. And he used all his power in him...Once I remember Lee Eastman [de Koooning's lawyer] said to me on the beach, "Isn't it wonderful how a guy like Bill, so simple and so timid, could get all this success?" I looked at him and said, "Are you joking?" But it's very difficult to pin down Bill on that. Because if he were to walk in right now his presence would almost disqualify everything I'm saying because he would be so sweet and generous."
- Conrand Marca-Relli on de Kooning
"I've simply tried to do what I think is best," Knight said. "Regrets? Sure. Just like the song. I have regrets. I wish I could done things better at times. I wish I would have had a better answer, a better way, at times. But just like he said, I did it my way and when I look back on it, I don't think my way was all that bad."
- Bob Knight
"I would like to speak of Bill and his last painting years. He knew he had lost a battle, give the man credit for that magnificent perception, self-control, and plain old-fashioned courage. As he himself said, "A lot of trembling but no fear." Like an old soldier with a mortal wound, he was retreating step by stubborn step, no breaking of ranks, no wild scattering of troops, but a measured withdrawal. Marked by the iron control and discipline of a lifetime, he surrounded his beloved paintings and slowly moved them back, and back, and back. His flags are still flying, his ranks standing firm, his status though challenged unconquered to the end."
- Joan Ward speaking at de Kooning's funeral
"I'd see him with his hands behind his back, his head bent, pacing up and down the length of his studio. I could see the easel standing there and I'd wonder if he ever get to paint and stop walking up and down. Quite often I think of that image now. That was the time when I was a photographer, doing jobs or going out on my own to photograph in the streets. Then it seemed to me I was making a big effort. Now thinking of de Kooning, I understand better what it is, to face a white sheet of canvas; to face something that does not respond to my movements, all will have to come from inside me. No help looking through the viewfinder and choosing the Decisive Moment."
- Robert Frank
