The city proper consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. All except Staten Island are home to more than a million people and independently would be counted among the largest cities in the United States.

New York City attracts large numbers of immigrants from over 180 countries, as well as people from all over the United States, who come to the city for its culture, energy, cosmopolitanism, and economic opportunity. The city is also notable for currently having the lowest crime rate among major American cities.
