About Me

Sophia Exiner has been playing the piano, singing and dancing since the age of 5. The dancing has fallen by the wayside a little, but the piano playing, and to a lesser extent the singing, continues. She has just finished studying at the Victorian College of the Arts for a Bachelor of Music in Improvisation. She is still a little apprehensive about what she will do next.

Sophia plays in a number of outfits, she particularly likes her new summer dress. Other bands she plays in include Frabjous Day, a funky soul band named The Small Mercies and OK OK OK - crazy original improvised music. Sophia had a reasonably productive summer holiday and came second in the 2007 Wilddog Hill Song Writing Competition, went to the beach a lot, and was a finalist in the Big Band Sunsets Young Arrangers Competition.
A new project for Sophia is her pop/folk/jazz band, surprisingly named SOPHIA + BAND . In this she sings her own songs and generally enjoys life so please check out an upcoming gig if you can!
She is an unashamed fan of good musical theatre. Well, even bad musical theatre. In 2006 she was musical director for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at St Hilda's College and had a lot of fun. The Beatles remain her first and truest love, though she is pretty into jazz right now.

Some musings on the musician/musical instrument connection&

How much is the relationship between an instrument and musician collaboration? Is it a give-take relationship? We need instruments to make the music we hear, and without us an instrument is merely a s...
