Influences: Briefly: Afro-American Jazz - Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Roland Kirk, Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, etc. Euro-Jazz - Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, John Stevens, Han Bennink, Trevor Watts, etc. R & B - Graham Bond was a very big influence on me in my teens; with Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, & Dick Heckstall-Smith, they were the hottest fusion band around. Avant Rock = (early) Soft Machine, Zappa, Beefheart, Henry Cow, The Residents, This Heat, Faust, Gong (ok - more Space than Avant). Two of my favourite soprano players - Steve Lacy & Terry Riley. Other music - World, Contemporary, Ethnic, Electronic, Improvised. I'm still catching up on other recent musical developments, & I guess that must also influence me to some extent, even if unconsciously! Other: Performance Art in the sense that live music, dance, & theatre are performances. Painting, drawing, sculpting, writing & other "non-performing arts" can all be incorporated into this live framework.
Sounds Like: Unfortunately the MCCB Global website is lying dead in the deep waters off the coast of Outer Cyberia, but all the reviews are now on my Aliens@C blog, www.aliensatsea.blogspot.com. There’s a review in the New Musical Express from 1978 of Red Balune’s one & only single "Capitalist Kid / Spider In Love" - "Music of the revolution - sounds like Kraftwerk falling down a liftshaft with somebody else’s instruments"... I considered that a huge compliment at the time, & still do! So....that’s what part of all this mishmash sounds like anyway - but there are some nice tunes here as well though! Over to you, listeners.
