About Me

Music in Schools Today is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization that has been promoting music education in public schools and youth centers in low income neighborhoods since 1983. We believe that music nurtures the human spirit, promotes personal development, and is central to learning and the creative process. Music and the arts are as essential to a well-rounded education as literacy, math and science. Music, both in and out of the classroom, promotes physical well-being and social understanding and helps build bridges within local and global communities.

~Anderson Sa of

"Parents, put your children in art! There is an identity theft going on in this country now, and I'm not talking about credit cards ~ I'm talking about the psyche. One way to alleviate that is through art."
~ Alonzo King
"To meet our energy challenge requires the most important energy of all ~ human creativity. That's the real prize."
Daniel Yergin

~Stevie Wonder
"The most valuable things in life are priceless. They are courage, compassion, wisdom, respect for ourselves and others, and a host of characteristics that we call the beauty of the human spirit."
~Herbie Hancock
"This music heals people because music is vibration, and the proper vibration heals."
~Wynton Marsalis
"To understand the heart and soul of music, to earn the right to hear it, you must respect and honor the culture that creates it."
~Mickey Hart on ethnomusicology
"Music is about communication, creativity, and cooperation, and by studying music in school, students have the opportunity to build on theses skills, enrich their lives, and experience the world from a new perspective."
~Bill Clinton
"I believe that the day will come when all God's children, from bass black to treble white, will be significant on the constitution's keyboards."
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
San Francisco, 1956
"Life can be a pretty tough session to work on, but I'm grateful to my employer for getting me the gig." ~Brett Myers

"I'll show you how it's enough.
Go up on the roof at night
in this city of the soul.
Let everyone climb on their roofs
and sing their notes!
Sing loud!"
