How do you follow up your first full-length studio album after promoting it for almost three years? Well, you release a remixed version of it, you place a song in the end credits of an acclaimed indie film, and whet everyone’s appetite for the next full-length with a three-song digital-only EP. Of course.
Coming off like the lovechild of Ben Folds and Badly Drawn Boy, Ian shows his fun, sweet side on his latest output, Diamonds EP. The three tracks are extras (deemed too sterling to bury) that didn’t make his forthcoming album. Ian spent the time between Tomorrow’s Taken – which was highlighted by KEXP of Seattle’s influential DJ, John Richards – and now writing dozens of songs with his songwriting partner, Chris Newkirk (an entirely new approach from his formerly reclusive process), and recording them with John Mosloskie of Holler, Wild Rose! fame.
The end of 2006 found one of his tracks landing in the indie flick, “Off The Black,†starring Nick Nolte and he has another track that will be making an appearance in the Meg Ryan/Antonio Banderas feature, “My Mom’s New Boyfriend,†due out in the spring of 2008. Before that, his track “Catharsis†was chosen for an internationally released compilation that included Duncan Sheik among others. And he’s contributing a song to the soon-to-be-released Posies tribute album.
